Is it necessary to set up a charity for this?

Hello.

Can anyone advise me on the legalities of charities?

I want to start something where people can pay money which I will then use for a specific purpose (buying small consumable items for others less fortunate). However I don't really want to set it up as a charity/give it a registered name/all that kind of stuff. I just want it to be casual and easy. Does anyone know if this would leave me open to legal consequences?

Please PM me if you might know the answer to this and would like more specific details - I'm reluctant to fully elucidate the proposal here in case it is in fact tenuously "dodgy".

Thank you.

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.

One “sensible idea” that is not as well knows as the formality of incorporation of Societies and Charities by setting up “Member Corporations” under the Companies Ordinance CAP 32 is an area of a trust law through the creation of a Declaration of Trust which can effectively establish a TRUST relationship whereunder a trustee is appointed to take on certain charitable objects. This is a less expensive model a “charity” and it can apply to be recognized under s. 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance CAP 112….and IF a charity will allow contributions to the charity to be prima facie tax deductible for the donors.
