I am considering a move to HK with one child in tow. My assignment will most likely be for one to two years. I will be provided a housing allowance that should cover tenancy for a 2 bedroom apt at the Pacific Place serviced apartments. I have stayed there for short stays but would like to hear from anyone who has lived there long term.

I stayed in a similar place for a year once, and found it a bit claustrophic after a while.............it just seemed to be so closed in and sterile.
Personally I think life would be more interesting and enjoyable in a more conventional apartment building. With a washing machine!

Double post. But I will use the space to say that I much prefer to have a few windows that can be opened, and a balcony to walk out onto.

Agreed with woods99. If your stay is 2 years, you might as well get a nice conventional apartment. The "hotel vibe" in serviced apartments gets old fast.

Thanks for the replies. Axptguy what do mean by hotel vibe?
There are a few reasons this option is appealing to me.
I have university aged children who won't be accompanying me so I will be maintaining my present residence so I will have to completely outfit an apartment in HK only to have to get rid of everything 2 years later which means hassle at both ends. This way I also don't have to worry about breaking or ending contracts for cable and internet when I leave. I stayed in these apartments for a about month in 2006 and can't remember if the windows opened or not, my guess probably not. I remember hating the combination washer dryer but was otherwise was comfortable. The 2 bedrooms are 1900sqft which should be enough for me, my daughter and occasionally my husband . I could probably get more for the rent but I would have to forego the afore mentioned benefits. The reason I am undecided is if I choose this option and then change my mind all the troublesome things I was trying to avoid will only be multiplied because I will looking at even shorter stay by then. If anyone could play devils advocate throw some more cons I should be considering please do so.

I assume that you are not too worried about the financial aspects of it all - so why would you worry about breaking cable and internet contracts?
Being the devil's advocate, if you are going to come to HK and live in HK, why not enjoy the full experience, which includes furnishing a normal apartment and living a normal life?
On the other hand, if you are not worried about the financial aspects, why not take a suite at the Mandarin for the duration? (Joking in a way, but I do know somebody who lived there very happily for many years).

The furnishings are bland like in a hotel. So it's basically like an oversized hotel room with a kitchen. I find that most hotels are boring boring boring when it comes to decor and for two years I'd rather we furnish the place ourselves to give it some charm.
Just a personal preference though. Serviced apartments have their advantages as you say.
