Could "topper" be another word for mattress pad?
As for soft/hard, the ideal bed is neither. It should be just right for your weight. If you lie on your side, the shoulders and hips should sink into the bed and the back still be supported. If your spine is straight the bed is about right. If your spine sags the bed is too hard. If the spine is pushed up the bed is too soft.
Those slivers of mattress I have seen in some Chinese bed stores are horrifying.
Of course, with a sofa bed it's all a compromise. You're never going to have the perfect mattress in a sofa bed. A good bumper is a solution if you have visitors staying for a while.

We have a Beddinge sofa-bed from Ikea which is very comfortable as a bed. Not much to look at as a sofa as it is basically a mattress folded into a sofa shape but it comes with a choice of four mattresses (various combinations of spring and foams) and they are all at least 4in thick.
We've had no complaints from our guests but the only issue may be size as it is a 3-seater (but as it doesn't have arms it may not be as big as some others).

Suggestions:
1. Inflatable bed (search prior threads, sold in midlevels for fraction of Horizon Plaza price). I found them confortable, but low.
2. MUJI sofa beds (sounds like the IKEA equivalent), simply fold back, not sure if they are still available.
3. Hotel (could be cheaper than paying for the space required for a 2nd sofa).
Finally, you could put your parents in your bed and use the alternative yourself - likely less of a concern with bad backs and the like (and you win double brownie points for giving up your bed).
