Dried fruit and nuts are typically not a problem. There is no reason for them not to allow them on board.

While sometimes guards are overzealous, there is usually a certain logic. Toenail clippers are considered cutting implements are thus prohibited.
Nuts and fruits do not pose any danger to others, unless you count the possibility of peanut dust sending someone into shock.

Usually when it comes to food stuff, the limiting factor is on disembarkation - bringing foods into a country may be an issue. But bringing fruit to eat whilst on the airplane is not an issue. I usually have cookies, chocolates, granola bars, dried cereal or baby food with me and no issue so far. I just put them in a see through Glad freezer bag for easy inspection. HK-SF and HK-Chicago.

I agree, consumption on the plane is never a problem, it's when you get off that different countries have their own rules.
One thing to note though, even after you've consumed your goodies, the sniffer dogs can still smell traces of whatever the contraband food item was, so be prepared to be searched!

Liquids and gels are different since there have been cases with explosives smuggled in as water. That's why they are strict about water.
