Happy Valley for Young Couples

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

My wife and I have just relocated to HK from Sydney. we are 30, like to socialise (a few beers, glass of wine, dinner etc...) and want to make sure we are somewhere to meet like minded expats(single or not). Happy valley or midlevels seems to be the obvious choice but value seems better in happy valley. our concern there is that everyone says how quiet it is. is this quiet by HK standards or just plain quiet? any advice would be greatly appreciated. are we over thinking it?

Cheers,

It's not THAT quiet. There are quite a few nice bars and restaurants go. Midlevels is busier though, at least around SoHo and LKF.

Also, HK Island is a very small place. You can get to SoHo from Happy Valley in 15 minutes or less. The compactness of the urban area is hard to get your head around until you've been here a while.

I lived there for years - and Happy Valley has a nice community feel and some green areas... there are some good pubs and restaurants in the Valley... I think rents are lower in HV as well...

For me Midlevels is just a bit too much cement .. but of course very close to the nightlife...

Having lived in HK for a while I think the midlevels is just an expat ghetto. See the same people all the time, run into your banker colleagues when you don't want to, etc. Streets are crowded and some places have no sidewalks. Buildings are to close to each other. I would not live in mid levels unless it's on the side where Kennedy Rd and Macdonnell Rd are located. Robinson Rd, Caine Rd, etc totally turns me off.

HV is much more pleasant. Another upandcoming area is bottom of Tai Hang between CWB and Tin Hau. This is becoming HV part deux. The advantage is that it is close to MTR so a trip to LKF is only 25 min away by public transit.

There are a few serviced apartments in HV. Best idea is to stick yourself in there for the 1st month and see how you like it.
