Hi,

Need some help with tailors, there is one in every corner and seemingly one better than the other, but my initial experiences have not been too pleasant, need a regular one who can stitch some well fitting business suits for daily wear.

thanks

Thanks Jardine, Guess that is the way to do it, was actually hoping that they do a good job here but its no different, tailors especially good one are hard to find; with the ready made one at least one is sure of what you are getting!! any shops on hong kong side that you could suggest.

Daniel Fashions is really good. Not the cheapest but top notch quality in fabrics and cut. Daniel himself has a great eye for style and color. Also, he will warn you if you are about to choose a color and style that does not suit your coloring and body shape.

He's 2 minutes walk from the TST MTR, Bristol Avenue exit. I know it's not HK side but only 1 stop on the MTR from Admiralty.

I would really advise against off the rack. With a good tailor and a decent budget for material, 8K spent at the tailor is a lot better then buying a hugo boss for the same price of the rack. Plus you can opt for branded material if you so desire which I do.

I use Tai Pan Row. They are very popular because they have to shop fronts in different marquee buildings in central, so its convenient for people who work in Central.

The other thing they do is they make sure the sales person always advises well, the English standard is very good and the guy spends time with the client, I have been in there not bought, and that has made no difference to them, actually that is why I started using them. I came back and have been going there for many years now, and I think they are excellent.

You could probably get the same thing cheaper at other shops and within that tailor if you choose alternate locations to IFC and the Galleria it is also cheaper

For the past 2-3 years I've had a few suits made by Ideal Tailor in the Princes' Building. Good quality fabrics and good construction. A bit pricier than some, but worth the money. Ask for David Yu.

Simson's Tailor does good work and is very friendly, I and many of my co-workers use this company. Found at 4F Des Voeux Commercial Centre. 9042 7723 ask for Fanny. 350 for men's shirts, 2500 for a suit...

Agreed. Also in HK for 8k you can get a tailor made suit out of the very best fabrics. Even for 3-4k you can get fabulous stuff.

axptguy / rasbro / asr / Digital Blonde / grasshopper,

Thanks so much for all the help and advice, very kind indeed!! will try to visit a few this week end and give tailoring one more go, before I decide on picking it off the rack... :).

Thing is tried one on the TST side (one of those Bespoke estd. since ...!!!) absolute disaster.

Thanks again its great to be on this forum you really don't feel "All by yourself in times of need".

No worries, as you can see from the responses, tailors are very personal things, people tend to prefer certain ones, and its good to see other tailors that people use, I might even try one for a single suit

The best tailors in HK are Ah Man Hing Cheong in the Mandarin Hotel and WW Chan on Nathan rd, TST (upstairs from Sam the Tailors). These guys offer fully canvassed coats, hand stitched, working button holes on the cuffs etc. Not exactly Savile Row quality but as close as you will get here. You will be looking at about $10,000 for a 2 piece from a decent English worstead.

Stay away from any place that has to employ someone on the street to bother tourists with flyers. Most of those places are just a MTM operation and not bespoke and it's made in China

If you aren't getting SR quality from your tailors here, perhaps its time to look elsewhere.

I spent many years working in the retail industry in the UK; the majority of that time was in Menswear bespoke. Now living in Hong Kong I regularly go to Shenzhen to get Men’s suits and Jackets made for people living in Hong Kong. There is a huge price difference from getting a bespoke suit made in HK, people were concerned in the beginning that they never had a first fitting, this is a wee tailors’ trick to make you feel that the high cost you are paying is justified. If you have a design whether basic or something different then please let me know, I come to your office or home for measuring. The workmanship of the tailors I use in Shenzhen is to a very high standard.

Just looking at this thread and as somebody not selling my wares can recommend Peninsula Custom Tailor tailors in Star House (very close to Star Ferry in TST). I just had 5 shirts made and I'm pretty happy with them.

A guy called Mr Pau runs this business and you can reach him on 2317 0217.
