I know my question doesnt quiet fit this thread, but I didnt know where else to put it.
I am moving to the US and need some advice on which electrical items I can take with me as Im getting conflicting advice.
Since its a different voltage (110v)I have been told HK bought items 220/240v will not work or will need a transformer. And this is apparently bulky. (my understanding is a transformer drops the voltage)
But I have just seen that my TV and DVD player are 110-220v. So does that mean I can take and just get another power cord? Or do I just use a power adapter and it will work fine?
I know electronics can be cheap there, but I would prefer to take than buy all new.
Can anyone help answer my question?
Thanks so much - Im seriously confused!

Bring 110-220v items. You don't need another power cord, just an adaptor plug so it fits US wall sockets. Adaptors don't change voltage. Buy these adaptors here in HK as they are much cheaper - around HK$5.
For 220v items, you will need a step down transformer (converter). For low watt items, this is inexpensive - around US$5-10. But for higher wattage items, such as a blow dryer or high powered coffee maker, then the converters can be pricey. When I moved to the US, I took my TV from HK (220V only) as I had just purchased it before knowing I was going to move. It was about the size of half a brick (sounds big but actually not that bulky as I just put behind the TV). The step down transformer cost about US$120 and could only accomodate one item.
Good luck on your move!
