The big TV rip-off

I am in the market to buy a new TV. I would really like to get one of those 60 inch 3D TVs (E.g. Sony Model no KDL-60NX810). I visited both Fortress and Broadway and figured out that the total damage on the purchase would be around HKD 55,880.

While I was reading reviews on the product, I landed up on the USA website of Sony. I was surprised to find that the exact same model is being sold in the US for HKD 34,400 equivalent!

The specifications as per the US website suggest that the TV can work with HK voltage. Only problem being that the video system is NTSC. But that is not really a problem as you can easily hitch a NTSC to PAL converter from Wan Chai computer center to the TV to solve this.

Additionally, I always thought that electronic goods were shipped from China to the US. Shouldn't they cost more in the US then? Are the electronics manufacturers ripping us off?

Please let me know if I have missed something here. I am not a technical person but I just cannot justify the price difference.

Links from both Sony USA and Hong Kong below. The same price differences can be seen in Samsung.

I have found the same thing with TV prices in HK vs the UK. We are getting ripped off in HK.

its the demand. these resellers here in HK seem to think that if you're willing to spring 40k for a TV whats another 5-10K if you need the latest electronic?

now stop thinking like a westerner and assume you're a wealthy konger or wealthy chinese, they are already paying 150k in rent or either bought the place with no company subsidy.. whats 10k to them? probably another nice dinner.

The US is a much bigger market for these large TVs since most HKers would not have the room for a 60" TV. That said, I would try AVLife. They have many tv styles in stock, and willing to negotiate. I am sure you will get a better price than at Fortress or Broadway. Gome is another retailer to try. Included in the price is also installation, which the US price does not include (obviously). Also, HK retailers may even throw in some 3D glasses and other thngs like a wall mount, DVD player and surround sound system.
