Legality of motorcycle turn signal colour and position

Hiya. Sorry in advance about the long-winded question.

I want to modify my bike with a custom tail unit that has clear glass for the rear brake/running lights. Obviously the light is still red when on.

The unit integrates turn signals, so these are not on the sides as usual but actually inside the rear lights. Amber when lit as usual.

Here is the unit in question: http://www.xdcycle.com/discount-motorcycle-accessories/2001-2003-CBR-F4i-LED-Undertail-cbr-600-f4i-undertail-fairing.html

My question is regarding legality of having the turn signals in that position and with clear glass when not lit. Reading quite a few documents on the Transport Department website only leads me to the following verbiage on modifications.

"Side Lamps, Stop Lamps & Indicators

DO: If you wish to replace your filament lamps (side lamps, stop lamps and direction

indicators) with lamps of LED light source, choose only those that have been

approved by TD or have an ECE marking inscribed on them, and

are constructed to fit your vehicle.

DO NOT: Fit LED lamp not approved by TD or,

has no ECE marking inscribed on the LED lamp, or

not constructed to fit your vehicle."

The ECE standard pretty much only requires amber LIGHT and doesn't specify the colour of the glass, so I think this part is ok.

The question, then is about the positioning of the signals inside the brake/running lights as opposed to sticking out to the sides. Then again the current ones are positioned to be mainly visible from the rear.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hey cara and thanks.

The TD is sort of ambiguous on the subject. As in, they mention some stuff but not other stuff.

Here is the "Guide to Notifiable Alteration". http://www.td.gov.hk/filemanager/en/content_1178/alteration.pdf . No mention of lights.

Here is the "Alterations and Modifications to Vehicles Do's and Don'ts" http://www.td.gov.hk/filemanager/en/content_1178/dondont.pdf . About lights, it i only says that they need either TD approval or ECE markings.

They also say: "Be fully aware of any adverse safety factors that may arise through modifications." but this alteration would not really make the vehicle less safe. If nothing else, brighter turn indicators would arguably make it more safe.

Finally: "Any alteration or modification that breaches regulations may render you liable to prosecution as a result of Police enforcement action." Which is great, but I can't find the regs.

I'll ask my service guy too.

Thx for info Mr. H. Have checked with some bike "authorities" now and get same message.

I guess the core thing is that as long as the indicators and brake/tail light are the correct colors and can be seen, there are no problems as you say.

so long as the indicators are clearly to either side of the rear red light you should be fine. However, if the indicator is too bright that it ma dazzle thus the person following you can't tell if it is a left or right signal then there will be a safety issue.
