What are some activities, sights, and eats for kids to get a sense of place of Hong Kong? I'm not so much looking for museums/tours/visitor hotspots, but a fun way to foster curiosity and help children understand the culture and essence of the city. I'm also interested in hikes or visiting island villages for a taste of "Old Hong Kong" and would love some suggestions.
So far, Tai O fishing village, Kadoorie Farm, Chi Lin nunnery, Kowloon City settlements, and Temple Street have turned up in my research. I'd really appreciate opinions on the value of taking kids to these places too.
Thanks so much!

hi, I am a native HKer. to be honest with you, nowadays HK is fully occupied with shopping malls and commercial activities. If you want to see the true side of HK and normal people living, you can go to wanchai-central area, that's the downtown district in HK, then you can take the star ferry across victoria harbour to Tsim Sha Tsui, which is always a nice thing to do seeing the sun set. besides, if you are looking for outdoor activity together with some shoppings, you can take the MTR (subway) to Tung Chong station and visit the big buddha there.
enjoy!
