Kota Kinabalu

Hi, Kota Kinabalu is great, lots of things to do and visit. My recomandation is to stay at the Jesselton, which is a little hotel with a vintage feel to it and it's right in the middle of the town. There is the Gaya street market on Sundays, also easy to go for a walk at the promenade. At one point there are some bars and restaurants and you can have a coffee and a massage. At night a car park is sort of turned into restaurants that serve fresh seafood. All hotels can help you arrange tours. We went on a river cruise on the search for Proboscis monkeys and firefly at night. Another good trip is to the Kinabalu mountain and you can do a rain forest canopy walk which is quite exciting. From KK you can take a boat and visit the nearby islands and go diving. I stayed at 3 hotels in 10 days and found them all very helpful. I asked at 10 pm for a trip next morning and they arranged it no problem. If you don't want tours- although I do recommend them for some trips) taxis are relatively cheap. Renting a car is also quite easy and getting around with a GPS is fine. But roads are kind of crappy sometimes and slow.

Hope you enjoy your time there, we certainly loved it!

One more place you could visit is Philippine market (pasar filipin). Nice place to get beautiful Perls. Gentle reminder, a good bargainer skill is required.
