Pepper Spray: where to buy?

ORIGINAL POST

Would anyone know where I can buy pepper spray in HK?

I know HK is safe & I do not need pepper spray to defend myself.

However, I have enough of dogs (especially stray dogs) chasing me when jogging in country parks.

Thanks for your help!

I know that this is not exactly the answer about where to buy but:

"In Hong Kong, pepper spray is classified as "arms" under the "Laws of Hong Kong". Chap 238 Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance. Without a valid license from the Hong Kong Police Force, it is a crime to possess and can result in a fine of $100,000 and to imprisonment for 14 years"

I am aware of this as I also saw that when googling it.

What other alternatives are there when chased by stray dogs?

I do a lot of biking in the bali mountains ... lots of village dogs.... a water gun tends to dissuade them from giving chase...

spray vinegar...trust me it works wonders!

jobin, being chased by lots of village dogs is not a pleasant experience I'm sure. However, the idea of spraying bleach into a dogs eyes is abhorant and should not be encouraged in any way shape or form!

I'm with JJChan on this one. I am horrified to think that anyone would even consider pepper spraying an animal as an ok thing to do. Granted, being chased by dogs is not ideal but a water gun would be far kinder. If you are doing the same trails again and again, then take some dog treats to throw for the poor things - maybe they will realise that you are bringing good instead of evil! :)

CF, Even Brigitte Bardot would be wishing for pepper spray. You have no idea how bad some stray dogs can be. They are living in packs & defend their territory, really scary....

Do you remember the articles about the stray dogs attacking workers in the Disneyland construction site?

Understand completely where you're coming from Diego! Can't imagine trying to give a stray dog possed like it wants to bite your head off with some a doggy treats...you tend to just run when they're coming at you fast lol. Just get a small spray bottle full with vinegar and spray it into their direction (better if you make contact). It won't hurt them as they'll just cower away!

Actually I do have an idea about how bad stray dogs can be, but that still doesn't make it ok to inflict cruelty. There ARE other options, many of them far more humane. And if it is really that bad, then find another trail, there are plenty.

I love dogs but I completely understand if someone wants to scare off strays. Aggressive dogs are either due to "idiot owners" or they are strays. Either way there no matter how much I love dogs I do not think it is acceptable that they attack people.

Dog minds really don't function that way. It takes way more than some random treats to build trust.

I have come across strays lots of times when running. never had a problem. When the first start to growl and start towards you run at them, shout loud and wave your arms about, that usually gets them running the other way and next time they will run away when they see you coming. I went to a boat yeard in Sai Kung Yesterday to go on a boat trip and there was this guy standing outside the gate for 15 minutes whilst the yard operators rounded up all thier guard dogs and tied them up so this guy would not feel threatened can you believe it he said as I went in before they were all rounded up "there are dogs in there!!!!!"

190k, that is typical HK. I have noticed that many many locals are afraid of medium to large dogs out of all proportion to the threat. This includes owners of small dogs who will look at me in terror when I arrive with our relatively large dog.

In the case of stray dogs, the same applies as to any other dog. Ignore if possible. Act aloof. Do not make eye contact. Act "superior". Dogs are very sensitive to body language and odor queues. If you act as if you could snap them like a twig but can't be bothered they normally get the hint.

Its a known fact that stray dogs are everywhere in HK's coutry parks and as Diego noted, they defend "their" territory.

Having been surrounded by a pack in Tai O, I acknowledge that they can be intimidating. But similar to axptguy's advice, i ignored them and carried on as usual and they went their own way. And i havent been back there again... If you are prepared to take the risk of going somewhere where there is a known danger, then accept the consequences. Cruelty to animals is not the answer.

Mind you, there are plenty of safe places to jog in HK. For instance you could try the gym in your club house.
