My Brother in Law is coming to town. He's a major Hollywood studio exec, fat expense account and used to the good life when he travels. He asked me to find a "VERY nice HK restaurant" to take us to dinner next weekend. Apparently, price is not a barrier; however I'd like to choose a place that has:
a) really tasty food. I'm not interested in nouveau-riche that is all presentation and no substance.
b) reasonable servings. Been to too many places that put a razor thin slice of heaven on your plate and call it dinner.
c) Not TOO over the top ambiance. My wife and I are fairly down to earth, and don't want to be so giddy that we feel uncomfortable.
d) Fancy enough to catch a taste of the "HK High Life".
I was thinking of a nice seafood bar that I knew of once in LKF; it was on the 7th or 8th floor of LKF Tower (above the Russian Ice Bar), but it seems to have gone.
Any other ideas or suggestions?

First place that came to mind was Cafe Gray at Upper House - good food and nice ambiance, but not over the top.

How about Hutong over in TST - great harbour views as well. in the same vein is the restaurant in the China Club.
I've heard good things about Wagyu Kaiseki Den on Hollywood Road.
My foodie friends also rate 8 1/2 in Alexander House, Central or Cepage, Wanchai or Bo Innovation also Wanchai.

There are tons of good restaurants in HK, but hard to find "substance" when you want the "high life". Go to Nobu, all the Hollywood types would fit in there and he gets to show off his fat wallets. Or try Robuchon in Landmark. If you want big portions then go to Fat Angelos.

definitely bo innovation in wanchai. not fancy, but featured on bourdain's no reservation (the old one in soho), and a lot of travel guides. often regarded as hk's most important/innovative restr.

bring him to Aqua on Peking Road, it's has a great ambiance and a breath taking view, food is good and not a razor thin slice of heaven!

Alternatively - for a Portugese experience and wonderful food. Helicopter to Macau and go to Antonios in Old Taipa - its often fully booked, but worth the trip

cafe gray mentioned above is a good recc, according to your requirements.
Amber at Landmark Mandarin has fantastic food and wine. A little fancy.
Also Felix in the Pen, although not a personal fave.
Aqua group locations like Aqua, Hutong, etc often have great views. Food is good, but not as good as some of the higher end hotel restaurants.

OK, thanks for all the replies. His visit was great....we saw lots and went to several places (the ritziest ones he had already been to: Hu Tong and Isola).
If you want to keep this thread going for the benefit of others, that's fine! But he's gone back to Hollywood now... :-)
