Hello,
I will soon be moving to HK for an internship and I have a series of questions that I hope I can get some help with.
Is it worth investing in health insurance? I'm only going to be there for 12 months, and from what I understand anyone who holds a HK ID card can use the public health services. Anyone staying for over 180 days is required to have a HK ID card, therefore allowing me to be eligible, or is this a misunderstanding from my part? It seems to me that the public healthcare is very reasonable both in price and quality.
Also, which bank would be the best to open a basic account? And is there a recommended mobile phone network?
I'm just looking for a little info so I can get myself set up with the basics on arrival, especially since I would like for any large additional costs to be accounted for when I first arrive.
Thanks!

you could look at the following website www.cab.org.hk for local information. Hope this is of some help.

No reason to get health insurance, like you said, you will be able to use the public health system which is very good and basically free (minor charges).
Bank acct. is subjective. HSBC, Citi, Standard Chartered. Take your pick.
Mobile phone is also subjective, might recommend smartone/vodaphone. You will need to decide whether you want a prepaid card or a contract service. Being that you are here only a year, perhaps a prepaid card would work well.

Depending on your needs and usage. If you own a smart phone and have wifi, then, you don't need data plan as there are places all over HK and commerical areas where you will have wifi. Then, you can save money on sms.
If you plan to text a lot and talk a lot, then, it may be worthwhile to sign a 1 yr contract instead of prepaid sim which is a pain in the neck to refill (I'd imagine).
Get a prepaid sim and gauge your cost while you can walk into most malls in Residential clusters and compare rates of all of the phone stores.
