A Taxing Question

ORIGINAL POST

I owe about 40K in taxes, which were due in January. I am now about 2 months overdue. I need to fly to China on Monday for business. I recieved the standard letter from IRD on Friday saying that legal action was now being taken to retrieve the money owed. Important question: will I be allowed to leave or will I get pulled over? I am going to China to earn money so that I can pay my tax. I have no intention of "doing a runner". Hong Kong is my home. Bottom line: will I run into trouble at immigration? I would contact IRD but I leave early tomorrow. Very concerned I won't be allowed out.

There is no way that anyone here could give you a definitive answer to your question. Sorry but you should have contacted the IRD as soon as you knew you were unable to meet your tax liabilities. They are VERY approachable and are always happy to work with you.

Agreed. I have delayed my flight by a couple of days so that I can contact them first. Thanks again for your advice.
