Moving to Wanchai or Causeway Bay

ORIGINAL POST

Hi everyone,

Need your comments and suggestions. I'm moving to Hong Kong and looking at the Wanchai or Causeway Bay areas to find an apartment. Just two questions:

1) Can I find a decent 1-bedroom place for 12-14k HKD a month?

2) Any suggestions on buildings or apartment complexes?

Appreciate your comments; big help.

Thanks!

Depends what you mean by decent- you might get lucky and find a nicely decorated flat in a building that doesn't look great from the outside. You might want to branch out a bit and look in areas like North Point or Fortress Hill - you've picked two medium-expensive areas there otherwise.

Hi sistim, thanks for the suggestions. As a follow-up, are apartments usually rented unfurnished in HK or it more on a case to case basis?

Thanks Flippo. So you're saying that a furnished apartment is a minimum and I can ask the landlord to provide this or that?

Maybe I'm just getting confused looking at all these "agency" website showing empty apartments to be rented out.

ok.. well regardless of whether it's illegal or not, what's the norm? And if it is unfurnished, can the tenant usually ask the landlord to provide the basic things? (ref, sofa, bed, washing machine, dryer, etc)

Hi,

I would also suggest that you look at cheaper areas like mentioned or maybe even Sheung Wan or Kennedy Town. Here you will find property that looks old from the outside but usually renovated q.well inside and has grt transport to everywhere on the Island and Kowloon.

You should get a decent 500sq ft flat for ur budget - just shop around.

You dont say where U'll be working but if you can stand the commute then maybe get off the island and get somewhere in the New Territories where you'd get more sq feet:)

I think the norm in HK is usually for flats to be unfurnished or with the bare minimum - just get the agent to show you whichever u prefer.

Good Luck!

Thanks sk76. I'm working in Central and would really prefer just to be along the island line (that's what the MTR line is called right?). That being said, looks like I will be looking at cheaper areas further away. Also concerned about the weekends since I don't want to be far away from where most people will probably live and be going out as well. Cheers

I dont think anywhere is really too far away in HK as is relatively compact and whether U travel by MTR or bus everything is in reach in about hr...thats even if you move to the sticks!

Just make sure you live near enough to the MTR or bus routes so not walking too far in the heat.

Got it - very helpful. Do you know of a website that shows or lists the bus routes?

If you ask for furniture in the rental, the landlord goes to this website and pick up used furniture, more randomly than you would have done yourself. When I moved and was selling, many landlords came to buy. You can do this yourself, and do so to your own liking. Otherwise, you have to live with randomly put together stuffs for the whole year.
