Driving through both these countries with 2 kids over 18 days. Will be starting from London and doing the full circle ending through Isle of Skye, Inverness and Edinburgh. Have already booked B&Bs. Any tips or info I should know about or be prepared for?

Any info will be much appreciated.

Avoid the A1 if at all possible (OK for day trips down the coast from Edinburgh but a nightmare otherwise).

Try and get updated traffic reports before passing Birmingham / Manchester etc. as roadworks / accidents can cause long delays.

Depending on the age of your kids make sure they have something to keep them entertained when on the road.

If you're doing a long trip (London - Edinburgh etc.,) it's worth factoring in frequent stops every 2 - 3 hours just to give yourself a break.

If you don't have a GPS system get an up-to-date AA guide or similar. Google can also be useful for planning routes.

Depending on how well you know Edinburgh, try and avoid the city centre - loads of one way systems and road works for the tram system that nobody will ever use.

Have a safe trip.

You've said u have bb's booked, but ideally what u wanna do to truly explore the greatness of great britain, is to stop off in some cities along the way. That way you can explore them separately, especially with 18 yr olds, I'm sure they would want to explore the night scene in some cities without their parents;)

As for traffic, get ready for some major delays in/around the major cities as they will always be busy, or if u have a good satnav in the car then could always divert and take a more scenic route!

Always get brkdown cover/insurance...as i foolishly didnot and a brkdown on the motorway (in a new car) seriously hurt $$$$wise.
