Maternity rights

I have just found out I am pregnant. I have been with my company for 3 years but on 1 year contracts.

If I informed my company now that I am pregnant would they have to renew my contract again which is due at the begining of July or could they get away with not renewing my contract as it would be the end of the year.

I don't know where I stand legally on this.

Please advice

Sue

Your company is not bound by law to renew your contract. This is one reason why companies love contractors!

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.

Pursuant to section 8 of the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap 480, it is unlawful for a person to discriminate against a pregnant woman in employment if, due to the pregnancy, she is treated less favourably than a person who is not pregnant. Therefore, if your contract is now going to be renewed, you may have a case against your employment but you need to prove that your contract is not renewed because of your pregnancy. In addition, once a pregnant employee has given notice of pregnancy to her employer, the employer is prohibited from terminating her employment until the date on which she is due to return from maternity leave.
