what is a reasonable cost per day for a multi talented decorator, electrician, gas installer, painter?

My husband and I are having our flat decorated with new kitchen, toilet / shower room retiled, new sink / toilet.

the cost hasn't been revealed yet, what is a reasonable Labour cost? 1000-2000HKD per day?

of course materials and furnishings will have to be paid too.


just want to have an idea.

p.mason thanks for informative reply. can you or others recommend a trustworthy, reliable multi talented workmen, who doesn't charge exorbitant fees. The work has more or less finished, just curtains have to be put up, no mention at all about cost.


The multitalented leader has employed 2 workmen. there was scaffolding put up on 1 window, since they had to work on the exterior wall by sealing it up since there were cracks that allowed a little water to seep in, the other leaking window, didn't require scaffolding, but the wall where suspected crack was, was sealed up, so they said. All work done in our absence.

Work wasn't labour intensive in that it didn't require any repiping, rewiring , other than fitting lights, although in the kitchen, sink was relocated about meter and half away, theres a lift. Reason I want a manhour rate is because the multitalented person in charge of the project, was offended at my husband when he calmly said he was responsible for accepting the mirror cupboard in a damaged state, since he is the one in responsible for all the work including state of inventory arriving (all parts were ordered and paid for new, workmen had to install), there was a chip in the corner. Anyhow his demeanour has changed for the worse, despite my husband apologising to him about if he came across offensive. Later my husband asked for his ~ 7ft thin exercise rack to be painted, (would require about 30minutes to paint) and the multitalented head said 2000HKD. So you can understand our worry if the price we get charged for the work they have done (new kitchen, painting on only one wall ~3.6m x 2.5m, new toilet, shower cubicle, tiling and flooring, a new gas boiler installed, since the shower room only had an electic boiler which was removed, sealing work done on 2 exterior walls) is unjustifiably extortionate. Should we therefore ask for an itemised bill if the price seems extortionate? Which govt body would help with this kind of case if a nonresolvable dispute arises? eg. they might claim 2000HKD to paint the one wall ~3.6m x 2.5m in the itemised billing.

Actually, l was told an estimate was given at the start, for work required. but there have been extras like the scaffolding, so should we expect +/-10% of estimate and the extra work shown itemised in a bill? scaffolding for one window around 3-5k?

husband told me he has an estimate, could we apply a labour charge of 2000hkd a day for eg, (large sum for all local worker self employed team) and add this to cost of furnishings. eg kitchen took about 4 days? so it could be 8000HKD + furnishings? toilet took about 4 days also, so 8000HKD + furnishings again?

My advice to you would be to avoid Wolfgang Derler and WP Egnineering or his sister company WP Home Renovations!!! We used them and they totally ripped us off. They are currently under investigation by the EMSD (4 open cases) for doing unauthorized electrical works etc.

We are digressing some here. l just got the bill and the total labour is 70950HKD. is this a reasonable sum for work that was on off starting 19th or 26th May to late July , even though old toilet with it's electricity boiler and new toilet gas boiler with scalfolding, pipe outlet pipes were installed and put up?

l am most certainly unpleased with the finish of a cupboard he got made for us to fit into a gap between two rooms, l have taken photos, but unfortunately this site doesnt seem to allow you to upload pics. basically the cupboard was made too high so they chipped away at the top, so it is very uneven and there are come chips in the laminated wood cupboard. it is about 1.5m high by about 0.5m wide, and we were charged 3950HKD for it and its "professional" installation.

what are my rights, since full payment is now expected?

If you are unhappy with the work I would tell the contractor first that he needs to remedy and check your contract. Else you may consider the small claims tribunal with the sum involved. This is a court here in HKG where you can handle small claims below HKD 50k. You should try to find a solution with your contractor. However some deny to talk or deliver a fix.
