How about sending copies of the menus to newspaper outlets? Tabloids love such stories. HKers vs Gweilos. Don't count on lazy government employees getting excited about that (Try to prove me wrong.)

Can you let us know what restaurant this is?

I found that the reason for the difference in price is that the Chinese menu has special offers - set meals, afternoon tea etc. The English version just has normal list prices.

It would be an interesting exercise to have two people in the restaurant at the same time sitting at different tables, one ordering from the Chinese language menu and one ordering from the English language menu. Order the same items (including the glass of water or tea) and then compare the bills.

I scrolled through this hoping to see "the list". Instead I discovered how abusive people can be to someone who simply responds with possibly helpful suggestions in a thread. Wow. I hope poor Stella has found her meds.

I find her proposition not unlikely, and I'd be very interested in knowing if such a practice does exist and where.

Try learning a few Chinese characters or the Cantonese names of dishes you like. You can even use my tried and tested method of pointing to anything on the menu even though you don't know what it is. Always interesting.

I've never noticed any restaurants charging gweilos more but there are loads of places where the Filipino and Nepali waiters and waitresses regularly short change drunk gweilos, even a few hundred dollars. It happens usually late and if you pay with a $500 or a $1000 note.

The filipino team at the Italian restaurant Goccia on Wyndham Street have the habit of giving $30, 40, 50 change in coins so you'll leave them all there, in addition to short changing. These thieves really should be reported to the police. This is close to fraud.
