Ed, I understand there is quite a lot of fraud. However I find it a bit unfair to blanket accuse PayPal users. It is an accepted method of payment used by many very respectable companies and people.

Wouldn't it be better to say: "Don't pay anyone without seeing the goods?"

I think that if someone sees the good before buying I would think they will be paying in cash...

Way too many fraud complaints coming through - all involve Paypal - so we will continue to advise people to report any paypal requests...

We've banned all UN associated with the above emails...

This further warning just came in:

I had posted my fridge for sale on your website couple days ago and this Liu person replied that he/she was interested but was hoping to pay via paypal as he was out of town and would send his shipping agent to pick up the fridge. I had sent him a paypal invoice of HKD4000 but received a ( fake but quite well done ) paypal notification that he has paid HKD6000 ( he had included shipping charges without notifying me ) and that it was pending. I was to transfer the excess of HKD2000 to the shipping agent to validate the transaction etc., and once transfer was confirmed, the HKD4000 would be released to my account. I went back to my paypal account and canceled the invoice.

This person seemed quite professional and the paypal notifications seemed quite real. Anyone with less caution would have fallen into his trap. He is probably fishing around in AsiaXpat - I'm not sure how users can be warned but I felt responsible to report this.

We don't allow people to run a business off of our classifieds (they should be taking commercial banner ads...) so the Paypal ban will have little or no impact on people selling one-off second hand items as most will transact face to face using cash
