Cantonese lessons

Can anyone recommend where to take reasonably priced Cantonese lessons for an adult?

I live in Tai Po and would prefer not to travel to the Island. However, I am really serious about learning so if the Isand is the only place to do it then I will travel.

I'm a stay at home mom and would prefer to take lessons during the day while the kids are at school.

I would also like to know if any NES have had any luck in learning. Even if you don't know a place to take lessons in the NT, I would still appreciate hearing any advice you can give me.

how about buying the hk$125 book+cd in dymocks? you can upload the audio in your mp3 or ipod...so learning becomes more convenient.

WHat exactly do you want to learn : orale cantonese or oral+written one.

I understood most University organize Cantonese classes for foreigners, which are very serious indeed and will train you on a daily basis (like 3 hours / day)- either during the day or at night.

THey are probably the more serious way to learn & will give a boost on your CV no other classes will have, for a total cost that would be similar, at the end of the day...

Otherwise, I did start with oral Cantonese classes in Wan CHai : good teacher, small group (4 students), very good to speak...

Hi there Okie

I too am an Expat Living in Tai Po and looking for cantonese lessons...

I have found some in Sha tin, but i think they are a serious Uni Course...

My partner and i are thinking of trying out the lessons on offer through the YMCA at TST.

So we will keep an eye on your post...

cheers.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm not ready to dedicate every day to lessons so I will look into the YMCA. I'm not really looking for certification - I just want the knowledge for myself.

If anyone has any experience with learning please continue to post it here.

I think that a lot of people might be interested in what works & what doesn't work for adult learners trying to learn Chinese.

Thanks!

You can try to study the tones first from my blog: http://practisecantonese.blogspot.com/p/basic-pingyam.html

Actually, I don't think Cantonese is so difficult as if you can master the common 6 tones as "394052". Then try to learn some words everyday and put them in your mp3 player or phone.

The most important that is to found someone to practise with you.

Hope this help.

TC
