expecting mommies, does your doctor have Ultrasound / scan done every time in your visit? Would it be too excessive since it sort of disrrupt the baby? BTW, I am seeing doctor Joe Chan. Thanks for your advise.

The National Istitute of health in the USA has looked at US and how its use inproves outcome. Te conclusion, the anatomical scan done at 17-20 hasa positive effect on outcome, theothers may be enjoyable but suply little medical info. In the US many insurers will only pay for ONE per pregnancy. I Canada the averge number performed per preg is a litlle over 2.
My own preference is the European schedule. One transvaginal in early preg to be sure that the preg is viable and that it is not an ectopic.A second at 17-20 for the anatomical check and a third at about 36w to check the growth, the amount of fluid and the position.

Interested to know, cara, but what medical experience do you have to make your conclusions? Are you medically qualified? Have you carried out long term research into this? Perhaps we should be careful about providing reassurances about something without sound medical evidence to back it up.

Interesting article from Midwifery today - it is dated 1999 but has some valid points 6 years later.

personally - unless there was a medical reason for the weekly/ monthly ultrasounds (such placenta previa) then I would decline them graciously. They hear the haertbeat through the belly and if they don't want to get hands on (or ears on) they can use a little listening device called a stethoscope.

during my pregnancy i was only scanned once..and i would say that it is better to have as few as possible, the sound waves may not disrupt your baby but who knows if they are causing any long-term cell damage etc...i think if your not sure, better to be safe....

Just my thoughts... no medical background, just my personal experience.
I have a scan every visit, and have had one 3D/4D scan to show to family (they were really impressed by the technology).
My husband and I think it is very beneficial for our peace of mind to see what is going on, and for the doctor to take accurate measurements of the body parts (head, stomach, femur, etc...)
At the same time, we recognise that our mothers knew nothing at all - just what the doctor could 'feel'.
I work on a computer all day, use a mobile phone way too many hours a day, use a laptop near my lap at home, have a microwave at the office and at home, and live in Hong Kong...
I think ultrasounds are a personal choice - our family in UK only had one or none, in USA maybe two. Healthcare is different here, and I am not complaining about the extra 'views' inside every month... we enjoy them.
Being pregnant isn't that much fun for me, and I don't really like going to the doctor or hospital - this is the one part of the visit my husband and I enjoy, it also makes him feel really involved and a part of it all.
(although the first 2 scans kind of freaked me out in terms of aaaauuuugggh there is something living inside of me!!!!)
Do as you feel most comfortable with.

I've had three visits and three scans so far. One was at 7 weeks, to get the heart beat, the other was supposed to be at 9 weeks - since I am high risk, being 38+ and having had 2 miscarriages. But I had some very mild spotting (turned out to be purely cervical) at 8 weeks so I hightailed it to the docs and had another scan, and then another at 9wks 3 days, where we got the bubba looking like a small insect on its back waving its legs and arms in the air LOL!! My next is at 12 wks 5 days, and I hope that will be the last for a long time. I am worried that I have unthinkingly done some damage, but honestly the scans have de-stressed me so greatly knowing everything is progessing fine so far, that I guess that in itself is a positive? Stress hormones released by the mother are not good for the baby, init? When I think about it, I perhaps should've simply waited out the bleeding at 8 weeks and skipped the scan, cause it was so mild, but I just panicked.
