Hong Kong Adoption

ORIGINAL POST

My husband and I are looking into adoption in either Hong Kong or China. I've heard (on the grapevine only) that the ONLY children available for adoption in Hong Kong have some disability. Is this correct?

No, that's not true, the social welfare department's presentation of the data is misleading. "Healthy" babies are adopted straight away, so the only children that show available at any given time are "special needs", which could be anything from a birthmark, or a non-Chinese racial group to downs syndrome or more serious challenges. SWD does, of course, encourage prospective parents to consider adopting a special needs child.

One thing that is important is that priority is generally given to local (Chinese) parents, then to those of Chinese heritage, and last to expatriates. So expatriates looking to adopt a healthy, very young little girl (girls are more popular here than boys) will wait longer for a matching than a local family will.

There is a significant cost difference between adopting in China and adopting in Hong Kong. Not this that should sway your decision, but an adoption in Hong Kong will cost less than HKD $3,000, total.

Thanks for your advice, my thoughts. I'm feeling a bit more confident now.

You'll have to tell us which you decide to do...we may be in process the same time :-)

It's supposed to take about a year in Hong Kong, but that includes the 6 months it takes to legally finalize the adoption (court process) after a child/baby is placed with you--and during which time you cannot take the child out of HK (no visa).

"My thoughts" - I'll keep in touch. We've enrolled for the briefing session with the DSW on 18 March. I also spoke to ISS, but they weren't much help re adoption from China (as regards expat families in Hong Kong). My main concern is whether my age (45) would determine the age of the child adopted. Any ideas about hat?

Oops - I mean any ideas about "that"?

It shouldn't, which is a plus for HK in my research. I'm in the same boat as you (44, which, incidently, is too old to adopt at all in many countries) and SWD knows we are looking for an infant.

DeniseG, I meant to mention that we just had our last workshop, and there've been quite a few older couples we've met along the way. Our ages are nothing new for for the SWD :-)
