We have just been through our first IUI and unfortunately no BINGO. I (seems) am all OK, no issues found so far. The doctor recommended IUI since my partner has a low motility. No real problems with the quantity though. He is now on Proxeed. I just wonder how low is low? I can't really figure it out what it all means but he only had a percentage of 8% Motility. Is that very low and if so, is even IUI the solution? I wonder if maybe which such a low percentage we should go for IFV straigh away. Maybe with Proxeed it will improve so we decided to skip one month and try again the month following.
Anybody know more about the success rate in comparison to the motility rate?
Thanks

Sorry to hear that you had no luck with your first IUI. The WHO normal range for motility is 25% or more with rapid/moderate motility or 50% or more with rapid/moderate/slow motility. Is the 8% motility pre-wash or post-wash? You should have got a report showing the total number of motile sperm recovered and the motility % post-wash. If you are doing IUI, it's the post-wash figures that are important. Having said that, I don't know if 8% is too low for IUI. Who's your doc and what did he or she say? I suppose the other issue is how old you are.

Thanks. I am 33 myself, my partner is 43. It was before and after wash about the same. The quantity was OK, they didn't even need all.
I am with Dr. Doo and we haven't really asked more since we tried right away after we found out about the motility rate on day 8. So we will wait one cycle and see how much it will improve with proxeed. If we can double it then maybe the changes are much better. I have no issues it seems. Of course we should try a bit more with IUI. Just its really low I think 8% so were do they draw the line for trying?
Another question; Is it normal that your period comes much later then normal after an IUI? More actually when you are prescribed Progesterone (pils)? I am normally on time but (very frustrating) now it started 5 days later..

Hi Flower. As you're only 33, you have a bit more time to try the Proxeed and a few more IUIs. As for me, I'm 39 so we've decided to move onto IVF after a few unsuccessful IUIs. I was surprised that the motility figure was around the same before and after wash. I looked back at my partner's reports and the post-wash motility figure tripled, although our problem is morphology and not motility. I don't know where they draw the line for trying IUIs where motility is concerned, but for morphology we were told the line is at around 5%. If you tried right away, then did you do a natural cycle or a cycle with drugs to produce more eggs?
I think it's normal that your period will be late after using progesterone supplements. Mine didn't arrive until 2 or 3 days after I stopped and from what I've heard from others that is pretty typical. Hope that helps.

Iolana, I am also 39 and have just had my third IUI attempt last week. We have the same problem, my husband's morphology is quite low too. However, his motility increased after extra care with his diet.
Who's you doctor?

Thank you all soo much for the info.
Mrs Miggings, I remember somewhere that you have a
Chinese husband? My partner is Chinese too. Can I ask, how did he all deal with it? Maybe its just my partners personality... he is not a big 'talker'.. but sometimes feel I am a bit on my own with this.. I do the research on the web etc and try to find out more etc.
But he really wants a baby I am sure, still not as active involved as I wished..

Iolana,
I've sent you a message.
Flower - I don't think it's a Chinese guy thing, many guys have problems dealing with it. That's why support others going through this sort of thing is crucial!

Hi flower,
I did a cycle of IUI and was unsuccessful too. That was two cycles ago and we went natural for two cycles (dr was on leave and holidays got in the way) with no luck either. Now this cycle, if the timing's right, we're doing another IUI. The doctor said the same thing for me; my hormones have correct themselves with medication etc. and the environment seems perfect for pregnancy so she doesn't understand why it didn't happen on the first IUI cycle. However, my husband's morphology is also low (7% before wash and 9% after) so that may have been a contributing factor. He's on zinc now but doc actually suggested IVF if a few more cycles of IUI still don't work.
As for the Chinese husband, mine sounds a bit like yours...when I tell him about what the doc suggests, he's all stressed about it and says the whole thing is stressful...more so now coz it seems to be 'his problem'. He really wants a child but I suppose he didn't think it would be this much 'trouble'.....

Hi Flower--
On the Proxeed, just remember that the sperm production cycle is 3-6 months, so there may not be a lot (any) improvement in the first month.
I can't help you on the other, we have the same issue and have decided to go forward with a third IUI before IVF. You still have a chance you know, even with low numbers. The minimum for a decent shot, apparently, is 50,000 forward moving sperm. (We're with Dr Doo too)

Hi Flower
I did my two failed IUI in March & April with Dr. Doo with low motality. My husband took proxeed for three months and did another IUI with Dr Philip Ho in November. Though the IUI was failed but proxeed helped to improve sperm motality to 45% before wash and 98% after wash. Proxeed helps to improve the sperm motality and agree with "my thoughts" to waite for 3-4 months for the improvement
Good Luck

Thank you all. We did a all 'natural' IUI cycle the first time. Dr. Doo suggested to 'help' it next time with the injections which make me develop more eggs. I am not really fond of this idea because I want to keep it as natural as possible and am not too keen on twins etc.
If we do this then I have to come in right on the second day of my period? I guess I should just call the clinic with this question.
Next cycle we will try again. Then my partner is almost 3months on proxeed. Hope it has made some difference.
Keep fingers crossed... and save money in the meantime ;-)

Dear Ladies,
Could I please have the contact details of Dr. Doo & Dr.Philip Ho....
Do you know of any Fertility Clinics in HK that are not that expensive ?
Thanks,
Ken

hi ken
if you do a search on this thread the contact details for drs doo and ho will certainly come up.
as for inexpensive fertility treatments in hong kong, yes, the prince of wales and queen mary offer virtually free iui and ivf. again, do a search, this topic has been very popular on this board.
although dr ho teaches at queen mary, i am not certain as to whether he is involved in the ivf centre, located in k block of the queen mary. we used him privately.
good luck

I am in Beijing. My husband's motility is 10%, count is 10 million per ml, and morphology is >50%.
His vasectomy reversal specialist said we are prime candidates for IUI, but the (Chinese) doctor here at Peking University hospital said his motility is too low for IUI, and we have to go straight to IVF. I'm 40. (Ugh.)
What do you all think? Anyone know a good resource in Beijing?

Ladies- Just out of curiosity to everyone that is going through treatment privately- but is fertility treatment claimable on your medical insurance?- and if so, which insurance do you have and is the premium very expensive????
Thanks!
