Now that I am showing quite a bit, there has been heaps of speculation around the water cooler at work about whether my baby is a boy or girl. I've had endless 'theories' about the shape of this and the size of that but this afternoon I got a real smacker that I have to share with you:
After waxing lyrical about how carrying a girl makes the mother blossom with beauty, my colleague said that carrying a boy infuses the mother with 'manly qualities' including broken blood vessels on the nose, facial hair growth and heavy arms and legs. She looked me up and down and in the same breath told me that she is convinced I am going to have a boy!! Ouch! I thought being pregnant quite suited me... and God knows what that says about my husband who thinks I have never looked better!!

I replied to everyone "you have a 50% chance of being right"
My favourite was my maid telling me the other maids in the building all thought I was having a girl because I always looked so good, but she set them straight by saying "no she will have a boy, she looks terrible, at home she doesn't wear make-up and just lays on the sofa looking terrible"

Ha ha!!! We have four girls at work preggers, including me and i am teh only one that refuses to find out the sex.
I have heard all the theories and speculation that local culture uses to determine whether you are carrying a boy or girl. Just take it all with a pinch of salt - they man no harm by it.
On the other hand, I had a female acquaintance exclaim relief when I told her I was pregnant as she thought I was looking rather fat. Nice.

Yeah, my colleagues come up with some classics -- right up there with the time another colleague got married and when I said that she looked happy and radiant, another girl said 'I think she looks tired and that dress makes her look fat'. Nothing like telling it like it is, nomatter the occasion!

Lol! At least you know where you stand with them!Actually one of the girls at lunch said she thinks I am having a boy - clearly I look ugly.

I doubt it very much -- today's gem of wisdom is that boys are less demanding which means that not only do they cause less morning sickness, they also have less impact on the mother's appearance. Girls on the other hand 'compete' with their mothers for attention (Freud would love this), so tend to make the mother less attractive. I think the qualifier for this ugliness was having 'thick lips' and ‘swollen thighs’. No prizes for guessing what sex that particular lady thinks I am carrying!

Thick lips!!! Hilarious. Sounds like your lot are mean.
Well I have had no morning sickness and am carrying the weight in my stomach and chest so it seems to point to a boy.

Lucky I have thick skin. I refused to bite and told her I was flattered she thinks I have lush lips like that other mother-to-be, Angelina Jolie!
Even though by now everyone on this forum must think I look like the elephant man, I feel great -- like you the extra weight has gone straight to my tummy and my boobs and I’ve had no morning sickness. My gut instinct is that I am carrying a boy, but with all the contradicting theories, who knows?

Well my first was a boy and I was radiant. No morning sickness, no real tiredness, I worked right up to the day before I gave birth and was exercising regularly throughout. I carried him out front and it was a very rounded bump.
This time I'm also carrying a boy and am sooo tired. I look and feel terrible - am probably looking ugly (not that I care). Had morning sickness which was an all day nausea, too. And I'm much more pointy shaped this time. I don't think I've had thick lips for either of them. And I don't notice any difference in my armpits (but then I don't study them that closely either - do people actually look at armpits? How can they compare to what you had before, surely they didn't check them out before you were pregnant.)
So like Kimmi, I think the blow those theories out of the water.

my grandma SWEARS by the color of your nipples - I was eating dinner with my aunt and uncle and cousins, (while pregnant with my second) and in front of all of them asked "what color are your nipples? Can I see them?" I mean - family is family, but who wants your grandmother checking out your boobs? I said "they are the color of chocolate" to which my grandmother harumphed and said that I was having a girl. (dark dark brown nipples are indicative of a girl - lighter ones are a girl.) (she wanted a son for my own sake since I have to produce a male heir...) anyways I did have a girl. And don't regret it for a second! You'll love whatever comes out!
