ICSI fertility treatment in Hong Kong

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by asking 20 yrs ago
Has anyone out there been successful in Hong Kong using the ICSI method of fertility treatment? My husband and I have just been told that the only way we will conceive is by using this method (its like IVF).

Grateful for any advice/experience sharing to help us through this.

Thanks

What dosage is recommended for Vit E and zinc? He is already taking Centrum (a-z multi-vit). Is it ok to increase these vitamins if the RDA of Centrum already says its 100%?

Hi White - glad that you have joined this thread. Can I ask if your issue is on yours or your husbands side?

We saw Prof Haines and feel happy to proceed with him for now. He was really reassuring and told us that we werent his worst case - which is something! He said there was good hope for us. He was to the point - which is what we needed - we dont just want to be told what we want to hear. If there is no hope Id want to be told.

We listened to his explanation of what IVF/ICSI involves but suppose until you start it you have no idea the pressure it will put you both under.

I am still in a state of shock at the moment and cant believe that this is happening. Of course I am upset but feel that we will get through it - it just might take some time. What I am upset more about is the affect on my husband. How did yours take the news (if the problem is on his side)?

White - you are so right. Knowing that there are other people out there going thru the same thing is of great comfort. Also hearing the success stories helps.

I wish you all the luck in the world for next month.

Giccer - thanks for your advice. Trying to stay positive. Like you said at least the problem has been identified and there is a solution. Its just hard when people around you only have to cough and they get pregnant - even people who are just doing it because its expected and dont really want kids.

I just feel that we have so much to give - why does it have to happen to us.

I will check out the website. Due to go back in a couple of weeks for some more tests and will prob start treatment in the coming months.

Thanks again.

White i can relate to that. We are currently having a break from the Dr's and drugs. We tried IVF once and it didn't work we have done 5 iui's and the last one i got pregnant but lost the baby at 8wks in Feb that was a shock to us and has taken some time to get over. Trying "naturally" for two months last month we missed out so we have our fingers crossed for this month. I don't know how well i'll cope with going back to the Dr's and all that again if it doesn't happen this month. We can't afford to do IVF it's just too costly for us. We don't save any money due to the medical costs and rely totaly on work bonus to may our mortage. How long have we been doing this? a year and trying for a year before we realised there was a problem. My husband and i don't smoke or drink much and in our mid 30's & healthy so we get frustrated at how easily it comes to others. I have PCO. As sad as it is that we all have trouble concieving it is comforting to know that it isn't uncommon i never realised that untill i found this site and it helps. Thanks for sharing.

Hey folks, don't give up. I know it's emotionally draining...I was there once. My hubbie and I had tried for ten years, gone through 3 IVF's, and just when we were about to give up, success! the natural way. When I saw the urine test result, I almost fainted. Our daughter is now 9 months old. She's so precious that I decided to take care of her by myself. Of course, it's utterly exhausting but she's so worth it. Good thing we married young.

The doctor found nothing wrong with both of us, so it must have been a psychological thing. I got prego at a time when I thought about moving on with life and not let the infertility issue place such a burden on me. So, folks, don't give up and try to do things to relax yourselves. It'll happen one day. I know of many people having gone through the same experience. Good luck to you all.

I know the hardest part is not knowing when. In my case, I thought infertility couldn't happen to me since I got pregnant after being married for a year but then miscarried. And I had to wait ten years to be pregnant again. Of course, it was an emotional roller coaster ride but What can you do but to keep going. Our Dr is Dr Macor Wan.

The IVF failure wasn't as hard on my husband and since we weren't getting any younger, we decided to set an age when we would call it quits. I was always open to the idea of adoption but my husband, being a traditional Chinese that he is, wouldn't even think about it.

I know exactly how it feels to go through the treatment and fail again and again. I was always holding my tears until I was out of the doc's office. I'm so sorry that you and your spouse are feeling so down. all i can say is stay positive.

White my faboulous Dr is Dr Choy from the women's Clinic. We did our IVF with her at the Sanatorium.

Last year Dr Choy was successful in getting all her clinents pregnant. Obviously i don't how many of them might have lost theirs like me but still immpressive.

I'm trying to be really positive and we're hoping that this is our month. We just can't keep going on like this so it just has to be! White i so understand about the financial burden i know some people might say well you should care as it will be the baby of your dreams and yes thats true but it's an added stress and it's a LOT OF MONEY and i suppose it depends on how long it takes to get pregant on how much you end up spending.I have really enjoyed not going to the Dr's, no needles, no sitting in the waiting area of the clinic looking at pregnant women or couples with their new born babys to show their Dr's.I still get upset though just reading thru all these threads does it even though theres so many of us going thru the same thing. But White we do have to be positive and beleive it will happen if we don't then...... I have thought about what will happen with trying for other babys and we just have to get thru getting the first one first. And i heard a lot of women have there second and thrid naturally. Are you working White? Hng in there mate. And keeping venting to us as it's better than keeping it all in and stressing. Take Care

Yes White i agree with you about a whole new forum as i'm apart of so many of these preganacy threads and there's so many of us we. Dr Choy does use the Sanitorium for IVF retrieval and transfer, i liked it there they were all very nice. There are 4 Dr's at the womens clincic the others male.White if you are going to change Dr's do so before you start another cycle as it's important they have your history. Important they know what amount/level of drugs they are giving you which in turns creates the perfect balance. Just something to think about. Also if you transfer to the Womens Clinic it is quite intense, which is good i think as they monitor you so closely with blood tests and ultasounds they know exactly when your ready, especially if you decide to do IUI. I don't work, a lot of women going to the clinic don't work Stress is a major part of our problems as well. We could definatly use the extra income but we want a baby so much we had to make some changes to OUR lifestyle i was very stressed and depressed before since quitting work i have met some fabulous people and do some great things around HK basically i do manage to keep busy especially during insense time of my cycle i can hardly fit anyhing else in. If you want some feed back of what happens with my Dr i can pretty much take you thru a day by day of a cycle. I can alway email it to you if you prefer.

Your disappointment is still so raw, gosh i cried for ages after our IVF try i just though it would work, so sure. We were so numb didn't even feel like socialising it takes time and i didn't find it got any easier i thought i'd harden to it as i went along but it seem to get harder in every way. The injections hurt the blood taking hurt and so many times i said to my husband i can't do this any more but i keep going because i just didn't want to miss an oppotunity i was so torn. Also i was told by our Dr not to miss more than 3 months of trying as the drugs are still in your system so it helps keeps your levels up.

I must say THANK YOU to April and Fairybell for their words. Keep hanging on White.

Thought Id update you on our progress....I have started to take the fert drugs today and will then use the nasal spray. Im going back in June to have the ultrasound and then the injections will start. I am worried about the injections because Ive never had to self inject before! I suppose its just something we have to do eh?!

We had a bit of bad news last week after going to kick start on our first IVF cycle. My husband had a SA - we know its low but this time it came back with no sperm at all. Our specialist said we should see a urologist. Has anyone or is anyone going through the problem of no sperm? We are told that they may have to take it direct from the testes - not very nice. The doc says to go through the process as planned because on the day there might be some but may have to use the urologist. Any advice on this?

Another thing. One thing that struck after reading all your comments was the expensive cost of IVF through the private clinics. I am going through the Chinese Uni of HK - Prince of Wales hospital in Shatin. The cost of the IVF with ICSI is a lot cheaper that the HKD70K + fees for the private doctors. Can I ask why people go to the private clinics and not through the government hospitals? Is there something I should know!!

Hi again Asking, I couldn't do the self injecting i hate needles and when ever i get on or have bllod taken i don't look at the prep and keep my eyes shut during the whole thing. My husband was going to go away and so we decided i would do the injections these were 3 a day, i tried so hard but got so worked up and frustrated b/c i couldn't and needed to and b/c well just b/c it all to much by that time. Can your husband do it for you?

In answering your other question we were recommended Dr Choy by my previous Dr when we were living elsehere in Asia. It never crossed our minds about gov Dr's or clinics and i didn't discover that until a few weeks ago on this site. Now i'm comfotable with Dr Choy she has my history and i just can't change now even though finacially we could really do with the break.

Hi asking,

I also did two cycles of IUI with injectible and I am also scared of injections but by husband did it for me and not painfull at all.

Secondly when my husband did SA test the count was very good around 97 mill but the motality was low only 11%, whereas it should be 50%. Dr. gave him fertility drink ithink it is proxceed to increse motality and Dr also explained us that its not necessary that every body will reposnd to the medicine but my husband responded it very well next cycle his motality incresed to 37% after 20 days medicine and after wash the count was 8 mill and the motality was 89% but still no success with IUI. You can go to www.fertiltyfriend.com and go to the cirles there are no. of discussion on male fertility and about sperm counts etc I think would be very helpful to you. I think the proxceed will help my husband and will go for another IUI after two months.

I did my HSG both tubes are open but all of the sudden my BP incresed to 150 or 160 and its really very dificult for me to cope with high BP.

GP said it is due to stress and that is why I want to give break.

One of my friend also seeing the public hospital and she is really very happy with the outcome and they are doing all the tests and efforts which is done by private RE. Its only difficult to get a first appointment which generally happens 3-4 months and after you get an appointment it takes same time as with Private Dr. In my case I didn't want to waite for the first appointment as I am very eager to have a baby.

Asking can you tell my how much it costs for IVF in pulic hospital do they also do IUI etc

GOOD LUCK

Hi Perthites,

Can i please ask you about Dr. Choy, is she one of the assistants of Dr. Milton Leong? same clinic? I plan to see Dr. Leong, but after reading several posts, saying that he has limited time to his patients, i prefer somebody who is caring, understanding and not in a hurry to talk with me. Maybe Dr. choy is better as i also want a lady RE. How many IVF attempts have you had? I had one but failed. Thanks.

Chrystal88 hi, Dr Choy is not an assisant she is as quallified as the other Dr's in the Clinic. I recomend her we really like her and she always takes time to answer our questions. I've been with her since arrive in HK. We only did IVF once whith her and it failed my eggs weren't of good quality but we were successful with an IUI (after 5 cycles) recently but lost the baby at 8wks. At her suggestion we are trying naturally for a few months. The women's Clince is pricey but it's intensive and she monitors your cycle closely after a while you feel you spend all your time there but they get the right ovulation time better that way. If price is an issuse for you sone of the other girls mentioned a gov run clinic not sure which thread or fourm it's under i'll try and have a look and let you know. Hope this helps

The government one is with the Prince of Wales in Shatin. Its still private but you dont pay the expensive consultation fees. Its approx HKD43K for IVF with ICSI - a lot cheaper than with any HK Private practice. I dont know the price for IUI but imagine it will also be a lot cheaper. We are going through the Prince of Wales but have also registered for the free government IVF treatment - waiting list is about 1year. We thought we may as well - you never know you might need it.

Thanks Perthites for your reply. I'm still scouting for REs to try IVF again. My RE recommends Dr. Milton and the lady from the clinic, so it must be Dr. Choy.

Hi Tillu!

Who was your Dr who prescribed "Proxeed". Is there any way that I can get it at any Pharmacy or anywhere else. Would you mind letting me know how much your husband take per day etc. I too have heard of proxeed but no one has prescribed it to my husband. His sperm motility was 18mil and 95% after washing. I too went through two cycles of injectibles and IUI with no success and am taking a break this month.

Hi all,

I just finished my IUI injection. This two weeks waiting period is very hard, isn't it? I am trying not to lift my hope too high, but it is difficult not to. I am also trying to divert my focus on my work (I work from home as a translator, Japanese/English), and do other stuff like soap making and baking (which are the two passion in my life now). The hardest thing is, I am a fanatic runner/hiker, but I am abstaining from both activities, at least to the strenuous extent. Usually, whenever I have something worrying, I just go for a long hard run, and I can forget about it, at least for the moment, and get a lot of adrenalin and feel generally good. It is also hard as I am fairly new to HK and have only few friends, who are leaving soon to go back to their own countries! Need to find other less strenuous activities that do not inhibit my effort of getting pregnant, and find new friends!!! Please advice!

Hi there, there are lots of associations you could join American Womens ass. and the Australian ass. they both have set activies and all chat days which you can go to anytime so they fit in well with Dr appointments! Also the YWCA has some great courses. They have one called AT HOME which is an introduction to HK and a class of about 15 new friends to meet. They do it each Monday for a month you could check with them to see when the next one starts.

I also do some craft at home to keep busy.

In relation to exercise has anyone been told not to go swimming after IUI?

All the best positive baby thoughts going your way!

Thank you Perthites! I enrolled my helpe in the YWCA cooking courses, so why not me? That Monday thing sounds great. I also like craft. I make jewelery (with metal)and beads craft, but haven't done any sewing or other stuff since my highschool home making classes. What do you make?

Also, thanks about the advice to go swimming. I was wondering if it is OK to swim, as I might get infection or something, but it seems like a reasonale sports for pregnant/or pregnant to be women.

Also, great thanks for the positive baby thoughts!!!! Lots of positive thoughts to you too! (Sorry, I just joined this forum, so not sure what your situation is, but if you are trying, lots of luck to you!)

Perthites,

I have an appointment with Dr. Ho tomorow, so I will ask him about swimming!

Good, that makes four of us (and all the other people on this thread!) Good luck to you all!

By the way, the doctor's assistant told me not to eat papaya, as it may cause miscarriage. I also found on the web sites that certain herbs aren't good for pregnant women, including mint and sage. I will ask my doctor about that, too!

Yep. My Dr too told me not to eat Papaya.

Asking / Tilli, - any idea how much IVF would cost at Queen Mary. Also would appreciate if you could let me know the proceedure of registering with the Government system for IUI/IVF. Is the waiting period long for IUI as well. As we all know this process drains you off both mentally and financially.

Gov wait list for IVF is 2 years as mentioned before you need to be a PR of HK ask your Dr to write you a letter to join the list. IUI i'n not sure of. My Dr told me about this so maybe ask yours for more info also.

bigmama 20 yrs ago
Not just the waiting time is longer and you'll need to be a PR of HK, there is also an age limit ( I think the Uk government also put up the age limit recently..) I don't quite remember what the limit is, not over 40 or..? My sis-in-law had her 1st IUI last Nov. at the QM and she was 37 ( and she got pregnant!!! how wonderful! ) she told me about the age limit thing. Since my bro works for the HK Gov & my sis-in-law is HK PR so the IUI cost is very low, something like a couple of thousands..I think if you're not a HKPR you'll need to pay more, just as if you deliver there. Best to call up and check...

macaron mania 20 yrs ago
That is unbelievable...the age limit??? The older you get, the more help you need. Anyway, the situation in HK is much better than elsewhere in Asia. In some countries, they don't provide any fertility treatment if the couple is not officially married, even if the relationship is stable and it is just a matter of paper work.

Please support our advertisers:
Perthites 20 yrs ago
Yep your right the age limit is 40 years old

Thanks all. I will check with my Dr if I fail this time too. Probably try a few more IUI's privately!
