I'm 10 weeks pregnant and start to be confused by things that I can eat and should avoid. I am seeing two gynecologists at the moment. The lady doc believes I can eat everything apart from soft cream cheese, prawn, crab... while the other gyne who I believe is very chinese chinese... He suggests I should not eat things like green bean, winter melon, watermelon, chinese herb, tea, coffee.... with a much longer list.... while I have been throwing up three times a day, and with all these food that he suggests not to have.. I believe one day I will die from starvation….

Different cultures...different beliefs. The theory behind the soft cheese list is that there are more potentially-harmful bacteria present. But tell that to women in Japan (do you think they cut back on their sushi?) or France (...soft cheese?). Like the Y2K issue the sceptics will say that it was a lot of fuss about nothing - because nothing major happened. But the other side will say it was a very real issue - and the reason nothing major happened was due to the precautions taken. The Chinese list (I know about it but haven't studied it in depth - it includes bananas too) probably does have some logic behind it. But either way it's all about limiting exposure to harmful baddies, and possibly the best way is to follow the 'all things in moderation' rule and go with the O/G you eventually feel most comfortable with and settle with for the duration. Having two O/Gs by choice will result in different advices & philosophies, particularly if they are from f=different cultural backgrounds - just as in any occupation. Good luck. Enjoy a healthy pregnancy...and don't starve yourself.

I eat a banana daily..... I love watermelon and i drink coffee once a week. Limiting food really sucks. My obgyn in the states told me to not eat any shellfish and sushi during first trimester to not eat soft cheeses. I love cheese this pregnancy and i eat cheese whenever i feel.
Its so different how american/chinese traditions go. My husband and his family are chinese. We went out to dinner and they ordered everything with a shell... and when i didnt eat they asked why. I said i cant eat shellfish when pregnant. They said eating shellfish during pregnancy makes the baby smarter. I was a bit frustrated of course haha. Or fish head soup is supposed to make the baby smarter too. so i got a good amount of fish head soup when my MIL was visiting us. Of course any sort of melon was off the menu... haha but i still ate it.
Somehow you got to find a way to impliment both and it all comes down to whats been studied and what hasnt. I usually go for the ones where they have had extensive studies to say you can or can not eat it.
Anyway wish you the best and eat!!!! dont starve cuz theres more then one of you needing that food!

When I was pregnant, my gynae said that I could eat whatever I wanted except sharks fin, tuna (due to salmonella), certain cheese (blue cheese for example), mackerel and food that are not cooked properly - sashimi, oysters etc. Everything else including shellfish is okay PROVIDING I'm not allergic to it.
So for my pregnancy I avoided the above and ate everything else. I craved for fruits when I was pregnant so I couldn't have cut out water melons... especially with a weather like HK!!!

Its as TC says, different cultures different ideas. Japanese women do not stop eating sushi, sashimi, seafood, French women do not stop eating soft cheeses and pate, Indian and Thai women do not stop eating spicy foods.
How on earth is eating a banana supposed to be dangerous.
Talking of bananas, I went off bananas with my first pregnancy, just couldn't stand the taste, my daughter to this day (she's now 18) has never eaten them. When I got pregnant with my 2nd (now 16) I suddenly loved bananas again, he eats 1 or 2 a day.
When I was pregnant with my 1st, we were advised to eat liver at least twice a week because the vitamin A was so good for you, by the time I was pregnant again 14 months later, we were told to avoid liver at all costs as too much vitamin A was so bad for you. It just struck me then that if the experts can do a complete about turn in such a short space of time, what do they really know. Its amazing how we all managed to have healthy babies in the past given what we used to eat. Pregnant women have enough to worry about without torturing themselves over eating a bit of melon or a mcdonalds ice cream (yes, soft whip ice cream is on the not to eat list). Just be sensible, take precautions, make sure fruit and veg is washed properly, and food cooked properly.
I remember reading many cases in the past of women having strange cravings whilst pregnant including in several cases coal, if coal is edible I'm sure melons are!

This is my very first time to post a question in the net. And am stunned with the all these replies and supports. It is funny that I used to wish to have clever good-looking babies. But now, all I want is a healthy normal one. Recently I have friends who found out her baby has Down syndrome and one found out hers with Goldenhar (I didn’t know there’s such thing before). Not only I feel sorry and bad for the parents, I also start to realize how lucky and blessed we are to be healthy. Deep down these sad news worry me, and I just don’t want to the selfish and careless mother who decides to eat something that may actually harm the little one.
I understand keeping my mood positive is very important during the pregnancy and therefore again, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and they mean a lot to me. I think I will continue to cut off the soft cheese (due to the risk of unpasteurized), raw meat and raw seafood (don’t think I have the same immune system like the Japanese) from my diet.
There is one interesting story to sharing. I recently “fall in love” with tomato soup. Last night, I went to a restaurant and ordered nothing but three bowls of borscht. The waiter looked at me and giggled when he took my third order for the soup. :-)

I only avoided alcohol, caffeine and obviously medicines that are not good during pregnancy.
But you know what, YOUR BODY IS SMART! There are days you will crave certain things, or other days where you pick up something to eat it, and as soon as you smell it think 'oh, there is something wrong, I don't want this'
Follow your instincts, eat fruit, veg, drink lots of water, and allow yourself some treats so you don't go crazy!! And some days you will just want stodgy starchy salty foods, and you know what - IT'S OKAY, your pregnant :)

Yeah same especially medicines.... ive had 3 colds this pregnancy :( and no medication for each one.
With this pregnancy i love oranges. Now its a funny thing because i never eat oranges i hate them. when you eat them your fingers get sticky and you feel so sticky and i hate that. But this baby loves oranges.
Go with what you want first. and yes sometimes we get odd cravings. I know i do sometimes i swear i want to chew on rocks!!! Something gritty and hard.... Yeah dont ask me i think its odd too. hey but pears work perfect for that!!!
Good luck hun!!!

To mrs o, nobody is usggesting you take risks whilst pregnant, basically we are telling you that you will get different advice depending on what nationality person you are talking to.
And eating something whilst pregnant does not cause Downs syndrome or Goldenhar.
