Does anybody know if the Adventist has more equipment to deal with a newborn rather than the Matilda. I hear different stories that if your baby needs special care it will have to be rushed to the Queen Mary Hospital?
Thanks

anything very severe they will both send you to Queen Mary.
We visited both Adventist and Matilda before deciding, highly suggest that you visit both and ask a lot of questions....

I agree you should check out both places. We have a lot of information on our website about transfer etc and a list of questions you should be asking as well as what to bring and our prices etc. If you want to look round you can call Angela on 2849 0355. I will be on holiday soon but our midwives are also very helpful and you can call them on 2849 0321.

I am not in HK and so my opinion has no bias. The situation in HK is similar to that in every country in the developed world. Community hospitals like the Matilda and the Adventist are well equipped to deal with the normal newborn and the everyday problems that arise in a few babies in the first few hours. In the US and Canada this is called level 2 care.
For the PREMATURE baby, born more than 6 weeks early or in a few cases, very small babies less than 2.5K then Neo-ntal Intensive care can be needed and every city designates certain hospitals to do this. These babies are sometimes sent to the NICUs, the use of the word RUSH is rather prejudicial this is always done with great care, planning and after the baby has been stabilised in the primary hospital.
I have first hand exrerience myself of a mother of mine from Beijing who went into labor at the HK 7s and delivered 4 weeks early at the Matilda with an excellent result. The baby needed to be nurse in an incubator for a few days and this was done very professionally.
Community hospitals generally have less problems with hospital acquired infections in the nurseries and have much to recommend them for Obstetrical care.

Just a quick note, Matilda has supported AsiaXPAT for many years both as an advertiser and by helping with answers on the Medical and Pregnancy forums.
They are certainly one of the top (if not the top) hospitals in HK and we like encourage our members to support one of the companies who make this web site possible.
Cheers,

Hello everybody.
I gave birth to a premature baby girl (30 weeks, birth weight 1.240 kg).My husband and I went straight to Queen Mary hospital and they were great in dealing with a premature baby.I did not know I was in labour I just had some bleeding but not realy any pain.We arrived at Queen Mary at 10.30 pm and I gave birth at 00.38 am on 18 October 2005. She was in the Queen Mary Hospital for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks we moved her to Matilda and they were very good. Queen Mary offered great ICU care but after 5 weeks she needed personal care and Queen Mary just did not have the facility for that.We wanted to do Kangaroo care and I wanted to breastfeed. They did have a breatfeeding room but my baby was on oxygen (low air flow)and on a heart monitor so we could not move her to the breastfeeding room. They had too many babies in the ward, for me to be able to breatfeed next to her incubator. She was not ready to come home yet, so we moved her to the Matilda. They were helpful and my husband and I could move into the room with her.We started the Kangaroo care and the breastfeeding and gave her the needed loving care she needed. After 2 weeks she did so well we could take her home. After 3 and a half weeks at home her weight is 2.470 kg and she is doing very well on breast milk.Thank you to all the QMH and Matilda staff for their part in helping our little girl Kaydee. She is the joy in our lives.
From Stella and Anton.
