Elliptical Machine - safe to use during first trimester?

Anyone know of any reason why the elliptical machine (cross trainer) would be unsafe during the first trimester? It's zero impact, cycling motion, using arms too...

I'm thinking this may be a better option than floor exercises, walking, etc?

Any opinions?

LOL! My OB advocates no exercise and plenty or rest (which I agree with of course)... TCM doc said don't do ANY crunches, which I did plenty of both times.

Has anyone on this board exercised during the first trimester, when you are REALLY tired and puking etc etc?

There are so many benefits to exercising while pregnant. Less nausea, leg cramps and backache, easier labor, faster recovery, etc. etc. Unless your OB has noted a specific contraindication as to why YOU specifically shouldn't be exercising then it is perfectly safe to continue exercise as you normally have and it is even OK to start from scratch, with a bit of guidance.

Crosstrainers are great. I exercised through both of my pregnancies (even jogged 'till 7 months with my 1st) and never had half the problems that my friends complained about.

Feel free to e-mail me if you like. I'm a personal trainer. stayfithk@yahoo.com

Thanks for that Mummy and Kellym. We'll be trying this month. Due to the strange happenings last month, I stopped exercising for one whole month, and believe me, I feel it. I'm reasonably fit, been exercising for years, but still have the big thigh thing going on ugh.

I have an elliptical trainer at home (plus a whole range of instructor led DVDs, inc. yoga, plus weights etc). The ET used to be my machine of choice in the gym, but I now I prefer my DVDs for variety. I was trying to sell the elliptical trainer (which I bought hoping DH would use) to make more room, but I think I'll start using it myself with some workout music.

I've got some pregnancy yoga DVDs including Crunch and Yoga Mama, and one of them has you doing things with your abdomen, like pulling in your stomach and moving it around etc. I was wondering if that was safe to do in the first trimester. All the women on the DVD looked past their 1st T...

OK - as a doctor I have to tell you that most doctors are woefully ignorant of exercise, and the importance of exercise. Whatever you do, do not stop exercising - just be sure to exercise in such a way that you do not damage yourself. You get more "springy" in your cartilage and joints ... as for the thighs .... lymph drainage? HGH after you are finished pregnancy and breast-feeding?

I trained on the elliptical my entire pregnancy with my daugther. I was relatively fit, 32 when I was pregnant, with some mild nausea. During my entire nine and a half months of pregnancy I did skipped only three days of exercise. My OB suggested that I just exercise at my normal rate and to stop if I felt dizzy or faint. Neither ever happened. I testify to this day that the reason that I lot all my pregnancy weight plus an additional 5 KG is due to my active lifestyle and breastfeeding. GO GIRL!!! It feels great!

Thanks hkchoichoi. Yes, my TCM doc said exercise is fine as long as I don't do crunches and impact sports/exercise. She said I have to avoid all pressure on my stomach.

She said intercourse was fine too as long as I didnt put pressure on my stomach. Anyone carried on with business as usual in the first trimester?
