Hi all,


Can you please advise me on a good obgyn on HK island? Preferrably in Central. Dr. Ho is certainly a great doctor but sadly I am all priced out! If you can, please advise on the doctors':-


1. Prenatal charges - for consultation, ultrasound

2. Delivery charges - for both VB and CS.

3. Delivery hospitals they use

Ive heard the Public Health system here in HK is brilliant with great Doctors etc, mabe you could give them a try. If you have a HK ID you are welcome to go along.GOOD LUCK

Since I am considering elective CS, I think I will have to go private. Public hospitals won't perform CS unless it's for medical reason :(

Hi My Thoughts - It's kind of a preference for both hubby and I. And a close friend of mine has been having problems down under ever since her VB 5 years ago. My obgyn said the risk level is pretty similar for both VB and CS as there could be complications in both.


I am still keeping my options open at this time. I am only in my 11th week so still got time to decide. So why do you prefer VB?

Thanks very much Sasha. I definitely think it's a personal choice whether one goes for VB or CS. I think whichever birthing method you choose, it would be a "memory of a lifetime" for both you and your partner :)


Dr. Ho priced me out coz he charges 1600 (800 for consult then 800 for U/S) for each prenatal visits exc. tests. I am happy to pay up to 900 per visit and I know many obgynes offer this kind of rate. So I created this thread in the hope to find a good gynae with reasonable rate through word of mouth.


Since I need to work also, public route is rather inconvenient as there are generally long waiting time. I will still register at Tsan Yuk later in case I decide to go for VB. Thanks for your advice.

Hi sunny--you know, if you want (or need) a c-section, HK is the place to be. I think the stats are something over 50% of births are by c-section here, so invariably whichever doctor you choose will have plenty of experience doing them.


I did loads of reading on this when I was pregnant and there seem to be so many advantages for baby in going naturally. It's been a couple of years now, so let's see what I remember. For one thing, the baby is born when it's ready, when everything is as fully developed as it should be while scheduled c-sections are typically done 2 weeks before the due date. There's a lot of final growing that occurs during those last 2 weeks, and maybe your baby would even have preferred to be born a week late. There's supposed to be something about the constriction of the birth process that clears the baby's lungs and prepares them better for breathing. The antibiotics the mother needs to be on after the section often cause thrush/yeast infection in the mum's breasts which is very painful for her and is readily transferred (and painful) for baby. Mother is recovering from adominal surgery while baby is newborn and needs/wants holding and carrying and skin to skin time with mummy. There's even some (small) risk the mother will hemmorage in a future pregnancy after a c-section.


For me, it was an easy decision to do things nature's way. I personally wouldn't choose a section purely to avoid some discomfort. Deliverying your baby is an amazing thing, the discomfort is a far distant memory the second you see your baby's head. My husband even "caught" our daughter and placed her on my tummy. He still tears up when he talks of it, an incredibly emotional moment for him and for both of us.


Anyway, I don't mean to make you feel badly if you really do want a c-section, but I wouldn't do it just out of anxiety. And remember, doctors generally prefer doing sections, they make much more money and they can schedule the surgery (no midnight wake ups!) so don't think you get an unbiased opinion from your doctor :-)


It IS a shame about your friend's complications. Her situation isn't a normal VB recovery.


At some point you'll probably take an antenatal class and you can talk pros and cons with the midwife too.

Hi sunny, I know you were looking for a referral, but I'm not sure I can help if you have budget constraints. I had Lucy Lord and I don't remember the charges (insurance covered them) but her practice would give them to you. Most people go with the package as there are some savings that way. I chose Lucy because she has an excellent reputation but one of the things I appreciated about her is that she is a true feminist. By that I mean that if you have (well considered) preferences about how you'd like things to go, she'll do every thing she can to honor them. That goes for VB or CS.


And sasha, of course I have biases, everyone does, sunny just asked why I chose a VB and I answered her (not you). Be glad you live in a developed country and have good access to medical care so you can safely chose what you want.

Choosing between VB and C-section is totally a personal choice - medically, my father has said that in his opinion, in terms of OVERALL vaginal health - c-section is far less traumatic - in terms of long term (when you're older) situations. It does pose risk as it is surgery, and there are complications that arise with c-sections, just as their are complications that arise with VB.


I'm now a veteran of BOTH. Gotta say - much preferred the natural - in terms of recovery, in terms of my own feelings after, and in terms of complications I had after my c-section, which my father assured me were mild and not serious - but they drove me crazy. I had spinal fluid leakage from where they put the epidural in me and so I suffered from these massive headaches - natural birth I healed and recovered much more quickly -although I did recover quickly from c-section as well. The whole experience is different - perhaps my c-section experience in Seoul itself just wasn't good - I was alone, my husband wasn't allowed with me, and I didn't want to have it to begin with. My initial breastfeeding experience was far more difficult with the c-section, and the baby had some minor complications - could be linked to c-section, but possibly attributed to other factors.


It's all personal - but I've done both...and now my father has convinced my husband that I should NOT go for VBAC for my third pregnancy, and has stated that I should just do another c-section as there are risks for rupture (1%) and the fact that they think I SHOULD have another c-section is enough to make me reconsider even having another child...HAHAHA.


Sunny - you'll make the right choice for you - but it's good to hear lots of different opinions. i'm definitely with my thoughts -talk to a midwife also -not just a doctor about the pros and cons. Doctors tend to be very "medical" and cut and dry - (like my father) where the midwife tends to listen more to what you are saying and try and address your issues on a more personal level. (my father is an OB, but I preferred talking to Hulda Thorey.)

Joseph Woo (my doc) charges about about 850 for both visit and ultrasound... he's a good doctor.

Sasha, Hkchoichoi & My thoughts - It's funny that when the subject comes to the birthing choice, there tends to be a "cat fight" haha. There is definitely a big divide on VB and CS and people on both sides do hold strong views. I think in general pro-CSers do get more of a stick from pro-VBers. The bottom line is it is a personal choice and one should choose whichever method they are comfortable with and should not to be put down by anyone for it. I mean that in both ways. I truly appreciate all your views on VB and CS and will take into account all your points in my decision making.

HI firsttimemom,

Annerly offer a fantastic service & Hulda is lovely.

All midwifery antenatal basics are similar.

I only take on very few clients and I normally like to have a coffee and chat with any potential client first to make sure we are "like minded" in what I can offer and what you are expecting.

I concentrate mainly on Birth coaching the Bradley, Laboyer methods with lots of extra natural ways which I personally have trialled and tested (about to have my fourth!).

I do limited post natal work - again for the small amount of clients I take on each month.

I do live in the New Territories and do travel, my only limitation at the moment is that I am 24 weeks pregnant myself and so am not taking on too many clients at the moment.

Remember that the method I advocate is for you and your partner to birth your baby. I try to facillitate the husband/wife partnership in birthing. This is why I hope that your partner gets just as much from my coaching as you, as your partner and you created your little being and the two of you are more than capable of helping her passage into the world!

I go to Dr. Amy Wei at CWB. She charges 580 and that includes an ultrasound at every monthly visit when you're preggy. She delivers at HK Sanatorium and at St... Paul? I think thats that one in CWB. Anyway, I'm very happy with her and going to her again in preparation for our 2nd.

Her numbers are 25776889 and 25775549
