Circumcision dilemma

I'm about to deliver my first baby boy in a couple weeks time and I know my doctor will be asking whether we want to have our boy circumcised? I really don't know if this is really necessary apart from hygenic reasons. My husband is not circumcised so when I brought up the question for discussion he seemed kind of defensive and suggested that it isn't right to cut off something that was meant to be. We're not religious but if the pros outweigh the cons then I'm definitely considering. I know it's a very personal thing but would really like to hear from other moms with this experience.

From what I've read, there is no medical reason nowadays for circumcision. I made the choice not to have my baby circumcised. It causes unnecessary stress to a poor defenseless child. Do a search on the internet on studies done on circumcised babies stress levels vs. uncircumcised. As far as I'm concerned, when the child grows up he can make his own decision about whether to circumcise or not.

thank you so much for the info. after looking into this and discussing further with friends and relatives, we've decided not to put our baby thru unnecessary pain. as firsttimemom suggested, he should be allowed to make this decision for himself when he grows up.
