Turinal -safe ?

ORIGINAL POST

I'm 6 weeks pregnant. Had an ultrasound yesterday and the doctor said there is a placental seperation. Advised bed rest and turinal along with vitamins and folic acid. I've been reading up about turinal and it doesn't seem good. Is it safe to take. Doc says if the placenta doesn't heal itself it is fatal to the baby when the baby grows bigger and needs more nutrition. After 2 m/c I'm obviously freaking out.

How safe is the use of progesterone therapy in pregnancy ? I have not been tested to check for hormone levels. Doc said it will help stabilize the pregnancy. I'm reading now that Turinal is banned in the west. And progesterone is not recommended during pregnancy. What will happen if I decide not to take the pills ?

I had a placental lake (subchorionic hemmorhage) and the doctor prescribed to me progresterone. My father is an OBGYN and I asked him if it was necessary. He treated me as a patient, sort of giving me the pros and cons of the progesterone, and in the end I ended up being really confused. So I just asked him, DAD SHOULD I TAKE IT! And he said, "as my daughter I WANT you to take the progesterone." According to my dad, the jury is still out on the efficacy of progesterone treatment but it can be helpful.

My dad suspects my condition early on in my pregnancy caused me to have Interuterine Growth retardation of my baby as well as low amniotic fluid. But you can't know for sure. Take it easy for now - do what your doc says - it's in his/her best interest to take good care of you - I'm sure he's not trying to steer you wrong.

Hey BW-

thanks for the wellwishes- forgot to say that I had a baby girl - 2 weeks early, on the small side but everything is well after my pregnancy, despite it's minor complication...so take care of yourself - I hope all goes as smoothly for you!

Thanks Hkchoichoi. Congragulations on your baby girl. I have nothing to do but wait and see. I guess I am thankful that other than the ultrasound there really is no scary symptom like bleeding or painful cramps.

Bottom line--- there are no good studies showing that progesterone helps. Its one of those 'It may help and it wont hurt things" The quiet life style is undoubtably more important.

Thank you Dr.Moreton..I guess that was what I was looking for really - that it doesn't harm the foetus in any way even if unproven to actually help. By quiet life style do you mean the bed rest ?
