Obgyn Confusion

ORIGINAL POST

I know this question has been asked like a million times(so I'm sorry)...but I'm totaly confused who I should see!

This is getting frustrating. I'll be at 20 wks any day now, and need to find a permanent OB quick, so I can pick a birthing package.

Been to Dr. Lord...clearly she's good, but dislike her bedside manner. Been to Dr. Lam..also good, but he's sooo busy & missing that personal touch.

I've read some good things about Dr. Sally Ferguson & Dr. Doo, but I don't have time to go around "sampling" Doctors.

Help! Please send suggestions..

I just want to find someone that is excellent at there job & has a friendly bedside manner.

Dr Dawkins is nice and very professional. Has huge pics of his own kids on the wall in his office.

I go to Dr Doo and I find him really GREAT, very professional and with excellent bedside manners. Also, he sometimes runs a bit late but when I'm with him he always takes his time during the scan. He never rushed me out and he always asks me if I have questions and how I feel etc.

Also, he really looks carefully at the baby. I really feel in confidence with him and I can only encourage you to go to see him :-)

I also went to Dr Dawkins. He is very laid back, does not stress (or stress you!) but knows his stuff - I highly recommend him. He's in Jardine House, Central.

I see Dr Danny Kong and I think he is great! He also delivered my boss' two boys and she raves about him.

If you want somebody who has time for you and has a very good bedside manner then the best I have found is Dr Christine Choy at Care for Women in New World Tower - 3112 0480

I had Dr Eric Lee from Central Medical Practice and I really liked his manner. He has a very kind manner and explains as much as he can to you whenever you ask him questions. I had to have an elected C-Section with him due to a breech presentation so cannot say how good he is at helping women on the natural childbirth process. But I would use him again.

Have to agree with TC and go for Dr Sally Ferguson.

She has seen me through thick and thin (4 miscarriages and 2 very healthy pregnancies) and she is very into Mother and Baby welfare.

Nothing is too much trouble and i found her knowledgeable with an excellent bedside manner.

I had to have C-sections with mine, due to medical reasons, and she was very in control and included my husband in the whole process.

Sorry for waiting so long to respond...I've been busy moving & unpacking. Thank you you all for the replys!

TC or oj, how much did you end up paying (in total) with Dr. Ferguson if you don't mind my asking?

Does Dr. Ferguson offer 3D or 4D ultrasounds?

And does she see patients on Saturdays in her wanchai office?

thk you

I am 12 weeks pregnant, quite new to hong kong and no clue about doctors, etc. I went to one obs. lady in causeway bay who was awful and treated me as though I had a tumour rather than a baby inside. Anyway, I never went back. Was thinking of making an appointment with Dr Sally Ferguson after having read good things about her. My question is - is it possible to have pre-natal checkups with a doctor but NOT have them for the delivery ? My medical insurance doesn't cover delivery so was thinking of QM. If you deliver there, do you simply have any doctor available at the time ? Or how does it work ? Also, was thinking of hiring a doula since I agree that the midwife is often more important than the doc. at delivery time .. any help/advice gratefully received ..

My friend had a Dr she saw but he did not deliver her baby as she also had hers at QM. Doulas are not midwives, midwives are trainned and can deliver a baby if necessary doulas cannot. Doulas are there to help you understand whats going on, explain what your options are. And coach you in your labour.

Layla, you can absolutely consult a private Ob. Gyn. and not have them deliver your baby. This is the route I am taking. At the Queen Mary, the doctor who delivers your baby will be whomever happens to be on duty at the time, but remember they are all very experienced. As for hiring a doula, public hospitals in Hong Kong only allow one person to accompany the mother into the delivery room -- this is usually the baby's father, but I have heard of women who bring somebody like Hulda from Annerley Midwives in with them instead. Like Perthites says though, the 'doula' in this case would not have the authority to override the hospital's own staff and would be there purely in a supportive, advisory role.

Thanks for replies ! Makes me feel a bit better. It's all so new and scary. I had heard that you can only have one person into the delivery room with you and weighed that up. My husband went pale at the scan so I don't honestly think he is going to be that much help at the actual birth, no matter how well-meaning he is :-) Which private OBGyn are you seeing Mayafox ? Are you happy with them ? When are you due ?

Hi Layla,

Don't worry about things being new and scary -- it's the same for all of us at the beginning! I am 24 weeks pregnant now but definitely haven't outgrown the sudden bursts of panic (oh my goodness, I'M PREGNANT!!!)

I go to Dr. Phillip Ho, who I think is fantastic, but realistically he is probably a little to specialized for me. (He is a fertility specialist and tends to see a lot of older couples who are having trouble conceiving). Good luck with your pregnancy and enjoy it!

I had my first Appt. with Dr. Alex Doo yesterday. I'm sooooo happy I went to him! He is exactly what I was hoping to find in an OB.

He was attentive, friendly, & responsive to all my questions & concerns. He did'nt rush me through the appointment, even though I was the last patient of the day. And (yeah!) a doctor that actually has personality!

Both he & his staff were professional, friendly & informative.

Normally I'm partial to having a female doctor, which is why I went to Dr. Lord. But after the chilly reception my husband & I recieved from her, we were more than happy to try other doctors.

Thank goodness I found Dr. Doo! We're both happy about the switch.
