Prenatal/Maternity Insurance

ORIGINAL POST

My fiancé and I are both new to Hong Kong and we are planning to start a family next year after our wedding. I just found out that his medical coverage from work explicitly excludes prenatal care and delivery expenses. Mine has HK$10K for delivery but, since my medical does not cover any preventative care, I assume it does not cover prenatal care either. I’ve been doing some research on planning for pregnancy, and it seems that I should start visiting doctors and taking tests 3 months before we even start trying. Does this mean that I’ll have to pay for all the doctor visits and check-ups before and after the delivery?

Do families in Hong Kong purchase a separate insurance for the whole process? What about after the baby is born? Who pays for regular check-ups for me and the baby? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Allianz and IHI offer full coverage.

contact Neil Raymond at Kwiksure for a full list of policies that have full coverage and a quote.

You need to discuss with your company if they are willing to suplement an additional policy for you - it could be about USD 2500 - USD 3000 per year for full coverage.

My company was more willing to do that after I showed them what maternity costs in HK!!

Your company should absolutely cover your chilsdren- but it might be on the same policy you have, not a special international one.

Good luck.

BTW - most insurance companies won't cover maternity benefits until you have the policy for 10 months - so you are smart to look now for next year! (ie. policy should start 10 months before conception)

Mummy, Are you sure it's about only 10 month and not one year? what company are you talking about?

BUPA is one year as far as I know. I wouldn't bother seeing a doctor beforehand unless there's some specific thing you're concerned about, just take folic acid (ask at the prescriptions counter in Watsons), eat a decent diet and try not to drink or smoke too much - the drinking and smoking goes for your fiance too because they can affect your chances of conception. Good luck!

Mummy is 100% corect for Allianz and other policies - so check your policy carefully - it is all in the fine print!

Some are 10 months (Allianz), some are 1 year - check each policy.

Neil made a great chart for me that compared the different insurance options with amount of coverage for maternity, waiting period, annual fees, etc... specifically ask for Allianz and IHI on your chart, as well as anything else he suggests.

International Healthcare Plan

(Not the Asia plan it is not as good for maternity)

Taking vitamins like 400 mg Folic Acid is really important... and just being fit and healthy - yoga, pilates, etc... I wish I did more before I got pregnant!!!

Agree with Mummy - HK insurance company have insane low limits on maternity if they have any coverage at all. USA companies tend to have high deductables and not cover everything or make you wait to conceive.

Allianz is based in Europe.

The 10 month wait period is that they won't pay the bills for 10 months, but if you conceive at 5 months after you start the policy, it just means that you pay the first 5 months, and they cover the rest and the delivery.

Kwiksure is not an insurance company -they just a broker (you don't pay any extra) and help you get the policy and provide excellent customer service. Or talk to Allianz directly.

Please refrain from making negative comments about insurers on this forum - we dont allow negative comments about companies or people on this site (it exposes us to litigation + we'll never see an ad from a company mentioned in such a light on this site and that will mean I end up flipping burgers at Mcdonalds for a living)

If you have recommendations please post them.
