i am a bit worried - i have only just found out i am about 5 weeks pregnant - very excited but as i had just been diagnosed with pcos and had had a pregnancy test 3 weeks ago i thought I was not pregnant and on the weekend i ate a fair amount of soft cheese (Brie, blue brie etc)i know it can be hard to detect and i will see the doc on tuesday so i guess i will ask but has anyone else done the same thing?

My great aunt was a dairy maid. She ate unpasteurised cheese and drank unpasteurised milk every day of her life. She has eight healthy kids (now in their 40s, 50s and 60s). And the cheese you ate probably came from a country with decent food hygiene standards, not off the back of a sunbaked truck in sub-Saharan Africa. Don't worry!

Don't worry too much, it is fairly unlikely that you will have picked up listeria - my father delivered babies for 40 years and NEVER had a case of it.

Soft cheese, sushi, beef carpaccio, all these yummy things that I ate up before I realized I was 5 weeks pregnant! Don't worry pinkie, I don't know a single expectant mom who hasn't accidentally eaten / drunk / done something they weren't supposed to.

Lol!!! I saw the title and laughed out loud. I have eaten so many things I wasn't supposed to: soft cheese, foie gras, carpaccio etc.
As long as you don't make a habit of it, you should be fine. It so easy to forget what you should and shouldn't eat. Don't worry to much.
Of course, the Chinese girls i my office have a whole other list of things I shouldn't eat: pineapple, mango, chocolate blah blah blah. One girl actually belived that if I ate too much chocolate, my baby would come out brown! I didn't know whether to laugh or send her to the sanitorium.

On monday I ate some beef with chilli in it plus also a chicken sandwich from delifrance on Tuesday (which I made them heat up in the microwave) and my stomach has been upset since then. I was so worried that it might be listeria from the chicken, but I don't have flu like symptoms, just stomach symptoms (lotsa loo time!!) and not much pain, and the bubba is kicking away. But I am still worried that something may go wrong.
Anyone else had a stomach upset/food poisoning while pregnant? Did it affect baby?

The world is a disgusting place, full of bacteria of all types, even with good technique we all eat bacteria all the time. Even after a shower our bodies carry millions of bugs, you can run but you cant hide.
I delivered 5000 babes in my career I saw one case of listeria.
Also generally pregnancies can withstand 'single insults' very well, having one drink one evening is not the problem, it is drinking consistently throuout pg that is a problem. Dont look for perfection, look for very good.

I had a really bad case of food poisoning with my first baby when I was about 5 months pregnant - vomiting, nausea, diahorrea etc. With my second I had two really bad cases of food poisoning at 6 months and 8 months plus a bout of giardia at 7 months - all that after being really, really careful with what I was eating and drinking.... Dr just said my immunity was low ... It's a terrible feeling and you can't help but worry but going to see the Dr was very reassuring for me - plus I did't have a fever or flu like symptoms...

my 8th month of pregnancy - I had diarrhea for FOUR WEEKs...I lost 2 kg during that month - and nothing put a stop to it...no one could explain why - and I was mostly eating at home - so I must have given it to myself...
a month later, I had a healthy baby, naturally, vaginally - no complications... so try not to worry too much...some do say that continual diarrhea could trigger labor though -so that may be a concern...

thanks for all the responses - i guess it is more that is good to talk about this stuff - especially in the early stages when you can't really talk to friends - i know balance is the key and appreciate dr moretons advice on drinking. thinking it was almost impossible for me to be pregnant this month i have had 1 or two drinks about four nights due to various celebrations so felt a bit guilty about that - it is so hard - will not be having anymore though.

I am sure that there are thousands of French women that eat pate and soft cheeses whilst pregant. Not to mention the millions of people that had babies more than about 10 years ago when the 'specialists' hadn't yet decided you shouldn't eat soft cheeses. When I had my oldest child pregnant women were advised to eat liver twice a week as the vitamin A was good for you, when I got pregnant with my second 14 months later we were told to avoid liver at all costs as too much Vit A was dangerous. I;m sure they'll come up with a new fad soon. Just eat a healthy diet.

I was sooo careful with my 1st pregnancy but it ended in a miscarriage at 16 wks. My obs was so surprised when the test results came back to confirm listeria and said it was just pure bad luck! In hind sight I did have flu like symptoms but that is all I thougth it was, flu. It happened so quickly!
But then with my 2nd preganancy (not thinking I would get pregnant that quickly 6 months later) I unknowingly drowned my baby in gorgonzola cheese and lemoncello! He turned out to be a very healthy nearly 9lb baby. Just goes to show.

Although this is 'well known' I am not aware of any scientific proof concerning this fear. The best source of information on medications and other substances during prgnancy is the Mother risk programme at the Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto, I have written too them for their advice.

I thought these links might of interest to you all. The US FDA has said since 2003 that soft cheeses are okay for pregnant women as long as they are made from pasteurised milk.
