Fat Feet

ORIGINAL POST

I am having a fab pregnancey aside from my fat feet and puffy calves.

I am excercising regularly, drinking 4 litres of water a day and putting my feet up as often as possible. The only thing that works is my weekly foot massage but after a day or two the fluid starts to build up again. Dietwise I am folloiwng the low GI principles and getting lots of wholegrains, fruit and veg and lean meats. Also don't really use salt in my cooking so sodium is not an issue.

Do any of you have any tips that might help?

Will wearing flat comfy shoes help? I didn't work during my pregnancy so wore casual comfy flats like birkenstocks - i walked alot (until my doc ordered me to rest as the baby was a little on the small side) and never experienced any swelling. Some people experience swelling on their fingers too but I managed to wear my wedding ring right til the day I gave birth!

The same happened to me- my Doc said to actually cut back on the water, as water retention increases with added volume of water. He also said I should drink plenty of fluid though, the next time I saw him!

Anyway, I found that my mum and grandma also had this, and neither of them were particularly large either. It sometimes seems to be genetic.

A friend of mine swore by a foot bath in very salty, cold water. I tried it once- felt great and did notice a difference but too much bother for me every night after getting home from work.

I also wore support /flight socks, towards the end, but it was winter so you couldnt even see.

( luckily!). Good luck- its a small thing in the long run. I took a pic of my feet the day before I gave birth, to look at that pic now makes me shudder- I hated it, but they went back down within the week.

Lol! The footbath sounds a good idea but may only do it a few nights a week.

Luckily I can wear what I like to work so am wearing flat leather sandals.

I think the comment that it's genetic may be right. One of the girls I work with is also pregnant (5 wks ahead of me) and she has the skinniest ankles and feet and does no excercise at all. Lucky thing.

Will take a pic of my feet before the baby comes just to remind of how big they have gotten.

Thanks for the advice.

Vulvic,

Not to distress you any further but my antenatal class warned that there might still be swelling after delivery so don't get freaked out if it doesn't subside in a flash!

I agree with Phoenix, cut back on the water. Throughout my pregnancy, I never suffered from swallow ankles, calves or feet until one particular week when I was going through a very thirsty phrase, I started drinking like there was no tomorrow! The next few days, my ankles and feet looked like balloons!! but thankfully my ankles and feet went back to normal once I reduced my water intake.

Oh the joys!!! In my first pregnancy my feet became so swollen I could only wear elastic slip ons (very fetching). I tried to get my husband to give my pudgy pinkies a rub every night and keep my feet up as much as possible.

I also went up a shoe size after my first, I'm now a delicate size 41.....

At least it didn't happen second time round, good luck.........

It's so good to know I'm not alone!

To be honest I don't think I can cut back on the water. Have always drunk 4 litres of water a day for years. I also do quite a bit of cardio in the mornings so need the water to help prevent overheating.

The foot massages really work though so will try and go more often. As long as I know it will eventually subside that's good enough for me.

Cheers all for your advice and anecdotes.

Vulvic,

Thank your lucky stars if it's only your feet/calves that are swelling!

Everything on me is swollen...even my face. :(

Most painful right now are my hands. I developed carpal tunnel syndrome in my 3rd mth!...& it's gotten worse with the water retention.

With my first pregnancy I was like you...swollen feet/calves. So this time around i decided to buy compression socks & hose.

Best thing I did! You should definately get these.

Maternity Compression hose don't seem to be sold here in hkg, but maybe you could order online & have them shipped.I bought mine (the brand Jobst) in the U.S. at a medical supply shop.

The only place I've seen compression socks here was at the airport...either Watsons or Mannings. I bought 2 pair for flying, & now I wear them everyday.

Without them my feet are huge by the end of the day...like club feet!

I put them on first thing in the mornings before I get out of bed & before blood can rush down to my feet/calves.

Not ideal in the summer, since we all wanna wear our lose sandals. But I wear my with jeans & tennis shoes & feel very comfortable.

Foot massage...that does sound good!

My feet also went up a size. I doubt whether I can now buy any shoes in HK.....

I have become the dreaded victim of the shop assistant shouting " THIS IS THE LARGEST SIZE WE DO' and walking out of the shop in disgrace for being of large foot.

Like I said, I laugh now, when I had elephant legs, life wasn't so great. When your baby comes, you will care two hoots about your feet- the little cute thing will be the only thing you will look at for years to come.

See it as a positive. When I went home to the UK, I had to restock my shoe wardrobe. With an excuse! How cool is that?

Compression socks are a good idea - I'll look into that.

To be honest swollen feet is a small price to pay for having a happy, healthy baby.

Bumblebuzz I really have nothing to complain about after reading your post, I hope you're not in too much pain.
