the only thing i know is that pregnant women should not handle cat poo due to potential toxoplasmosis, not sure if that applies to dogs too?

I love dogs too, but, you may want to be sure that your wife feels somewhat part of the decision. Not sure I'd like my husband making a unilateral decision for our family....

Wow! I've never heard of this! There is no way that it should interfere with conception or pregnancy. I guess the big question is, would your wife mind a dog? Does she like dogs? When you do have a baby, will you look after it while she's busy with the little one?
I have friends who work in vet. practices back in the US, own several dogs and cats, worked right through their pregnancies, and their children are just peachy. I believe that having a pet in the home also builds up a child's immunity to allergies, you might want to Google that as well for proof.
