Candy -
it's not too late - it just may take longer, and you may need some "help." There have been many posts on this site regarding older women using assistance to get pregnant. These days it seems that more women are waiting to have children, and science is rapidly working to catch up to that trend.
Talk to your OB/Gyn regarding the additional complications regarding being older and desiring to conceive. There are some more risks, but provided that you are in good health, take care of yourself during your pregnancy and after, you can minimize the risks and the complications.
I have two friends who conceived their first at 40, one with assitance and one naturally. They think that waiting was the best thing that they did, and they wouldn't change it for the world.
Good luck!

I was 38 and 7 months when I conceived unassisted. It's not too late. I hope everything goes well for this pregnancy, but waiting certainly was the best thing I did, I'm so much more relaxed and secure now, have a good career, and know I'd make a much better mum that I would've even 5 years ago.
To be honest, I'd say to people if you can afford it and are in a place where you are secure, then being younger saves much of the uncertainty that comes with being older in terms of the actual pregnancy. But I needed this time, and I have absolutely no regrets. Good luck Candy!

hi candy
my sil had her first baby at 40 and her second at 45. granted, not everyone has her luck, but more and more women are having children later in life. many of my friends are first time mums between 39-42.
there are several "tricks" you can do to enhance your fertility - food and timing of intercourse...
no one can really tell you your chances, but i can say with all certainty that it is certainly possible.
good luck.

Well, I just had the nuchal fold scan, nasal bone scan and blood tests (the 12 week one - is that PAPP or beta HCG or both???). Nuchal fold was 1.5mm, nasal bone was seen and blood tests came out OK, reducing my risk for downs to 1/5900 (better than a 20 yr old!! heh). How cool is that??? So I'll do one more blood test at 16weeks, but I'm NOT doing the amnio. With odds like that I simply don't want to risk an amnio.
Candy, take heart. I'm going to be 13 weeks in a couple of days, and still am not out of the woods, but I give thanks that I could still get pregnant at this age. Fingers crossed you can too!
Good luck!

Hi firsttimemom, happy to hear that the nuchal scan went well, was it painful? how is it done? You're right in your amnio decision, my friend got preggy at 40, husband's brother is autistic, but she said, even if there is something wrong with the baby, she won't choose an abortion, so what's the use of amnio for her. The baby turns out ok and so cute. All the best to you. Hope our turn comes soon.

Hi honeypie, thanks! the scans were just ultrasounds - non-invasive and not painful. Better any day than even the thought of the amnio!! I initially thought what your friend thought too, but after consideration I decided that if the scans and blood tests had put me at high risk I would have had the amnio just to prepare myself. But I would have been very very very unhappy about it! LOL.
Cheers
