I'm 22 weeks pregnant. I weighed myself today and realize I've gained 18 lbs in the past 6 weeks!
I don't understand how this can be.
I've cut out my normal diet colas & only drink water, milk & fruit juices. My eating habits have'nt changed that much.
I have been retaining quite a bit of water all over (especialy hands/feet), but I spoke to the head nurse at my doctors ofice & after she asked me several questions, she didnt seem to concerned that I might have edema or preeclampsia.
Neither did my doctor after I saw her.
I'm really starting to get worried & depressed. When I had my first child I only weighed 12 lbs more than I do now!
Something just does'nt seem right.

I'm 25 weeks and have put on about the same as you. I was pretty surprised at how much I have put on because like you, my diet has not changed that much and I am still exercising at least twice a week. I am also all boobs and belly (my arms are still 'weedy' as my husband so charmingly describes them.) My rings are still loose on my fingers.
I also know that my baby only weighs a little more than a pound at this point, so where has the weight gone?? I guess it is all blood and fluids?
My doctor told me that if you do not have much body fat naturally, you put on more weight earlier on in your pregnancy whereas if your body-fat ratio is higher then you tend to put on more weight towards the end. I can’t see how I am going to stop growing, so we’ll see whether that theory holds up. In the meantime, I guess if you are eating healthily and keeping active then you should be fine.

Sorry, I did'nt mean to imply I put on 18 lbs so far...I put 18 lbs in a quick 6 weeks!
I'm worried because gaining 3 lbs a week for the past 6 weeks seems very strange...don't you think?
I was'nt tiny to start with...pre-pregnancy I was a curvacious 140 lbs, 5'7 (average size US 8).
Worried & depressed

undecided, I wouldn't worry too much about it if your doctor says there is no cause for concern. Just do your best to make yourself feel healthy -- go for more walks, drink lots of water and eat healthily. I am sure your weight will stabilize.

Undecided - forget about what you weigh, how do you look? Do you look healthy and glowing. Has the weight gone to your bump and boobs only or have you gained a bit all over.
At the end of the day the wieght is all relative. I have found I can easily gain 5 lbs after a buffet and it disappear when I weigh myself the next day.
As long as you look and feel good - there's no need to worry. Take some time to pamper yourself: go for a haircut, have a pedicure, go for a massage. I have been doing loads of this stuff and it really elevates my mood and makes me feel good about myself and my new body.

Watermelon may be good if you're feeling bloated and retaining water. (I think the chinese say you're not supposed to have it though.) Watch your salt intake if you feel "puffy." If doc says it's normal I wouldn't worry about it either.

Weight gain is not a very reliable indicator of how well the pregnancy is progressing.
But excessive weight gain maybe the early sign of diabetes, excessive fluid retention, proteinuria, or even pre-eclampsia.
Or just simply normal pregnancy.
the important thing is to recognise this and to exclude any pathological process.

I look (apart from the few lbs of "real" weight gain) pretty good...& feel good too. I just wish I did'nt have to deal with this awful bloating. Puffiness everywhere!
Thanks for all your suggestions & input
