Not sure what you mean by government doctor .. if you go to a government hospital you won't have any say over which doctor sees you. It's very cheap .. when I had my little girl last year I had a 7 day stay in hospital and c-section and the fee was maybe $650 or thereabouts.

if you are going to go public - it's a great system, but you will NOT be assigned one doctor.

If you are on HK Island, called TSan Yuk Hospital and make an appointment to register. You will go and each time you see the doctor you will see a different one who has your file in front of you. They are quick and efficient but sometimes if you have a history of something you may find yourself explaning it over and over again. (could be annoying.)

I had my first public - and it was wonderful. Paid about $700 all told for scans and everything...

I don't have an insurance, so I visit a private doctor for all the pre-natal care (HK$800 per visit with a scan) but will deliver in QM. If you work full-time, it may be annoying to go to TY for pre-natal visits. It took me 3 hours (with an appointment) to wait on a hard plastic chair to get weighed, write info in a medical card and be told by a nurse that I need to see a doctor the following week. If you don't work, it may be OK with you, but yes, you can't choose a doctor and sometimes can not come at the time that suits you.

Anyway, I heard mostly positive remaks about QM, so will keep my fingers crossed in a couple of months...
