My antenatal class never discussed breathing techniques during labour -- have you other moms been practising your breating? If so, what techniques are you planning to use and what are the supposed benefits?

the only thing my class taught me was to take a deep breath in and breathe out slowly 1, 2, 3, 4....and long-winded write-ups in the antenatal booklet they gave us.

i never used it except during my last tri when i felt undercomfortable...for labour i went for a "happydural" instead.

No, I never practised. My labour was terrible. Next time I will pay more attention to the breathing and try harder.

My antenatal class taught my husband and me together. That way, your husband can help regulate your breathing - if you start getting panicky, he should be by your side modeling the breathing that you should be doing. If he does it, generally you will start to follow him. wheelymate says, it's in slowly, out slowly. (my antental teacher called it Yoga breathing.) It helps you focus, it prevents you from hyperventiliting and it calms you down.

I had REALLY long labor (36+) but no pain meds or anything. I used the breathing (thanks to my husband) and some accupressure points to help relieve the labor. I found both to be very effective. Then I pushed my baby out in two contractions when it was finally time.

Thanks for sharing everyone. I've heard lots of people say that yoga breathing is great for labour, and as I tend to use that as a default breath in strenuous situations anyway I will probably stick to that. I just thought there were special techniques for when you are pushing like Lamaze or something.

hkchoichoi, it sounds like you had a great labour and great support -- if only I can have my baby out in two contractions like you!

Hi Mayafox

When are you due?

I have just had my baby and although I have cut back on my birth coaching for a little while feel free to pm me and I will give you my number and I am happy to have a chat with you.

My recent birth (2 weeks ago) was a homebirh here in Hong Kong, this birth was hard work for me, but I drew lots of strength from various breathing techniques. I do agree that your yoga will be enormously beneficial, if you can work with it.

mayafox -

when it came to pushing - I used the theory from regular work outs - you gotta exhale when the work is hard. (lots of women hold their breath.) My solution - I yelled "push push push push push push" multiple times to make me exhale. I guess it worked because at one point the midwife was yelling "don't push anymore" because the baby was already out. HAHAH. My husband also assured me that I was probably the noisiest women that they had in the ward at that time.

Midwife, Congratulations on your new arrival! I am sure you must have your hands full at the moment, so will get in touch with you later if I am still worried.

hkcc -- LOL! I would be happy to trade my vocal chords for an easy birth and a healthy child :-)
