FOAH,
1. Are you guys going for IUI first and then IVF, right? THAT is the logical progression not the other way around.
2. How long is your wife's cycle? If she is being given injections on 10th day- you are doing a Short Cycle. The injection should be an ovulation hyper-stimulation medicine. She should start getting second set of shots(suppression) closer to her ovulation date. And a third- hCG shot on the day they want her to ovulate.
3. You absolutely HAVE to talk to your Dr. about costs and every question you have. The stimulation meds are very expensive. The total cost (including hospitals) should be close to HKD 70,000. I can get you exact breakdown later in the day.
4. Success rates for IUI are considered to be between 10-15%. Thats why you hear people having upto 6 IUIs and achieving success. IVF rates are more like 35-49%.
5. I/we/people are more than happy to help with next steps and any other questions but your Dr. should be the one telling you all these details because she is the real expert.
a) Next step as I mentioned earlier will be that she starts taking a ovulation suppressing med simultaneously with ovulation inducing ones to make sure that the eggs are not released by mistake.
b) On the 12th day, she will be given an hCG shot at night.
c) Egg retrieval will be on 14th day. She will have to be admitted to the hospital that day and you need to be there as well to provide your semen sample.
d) Embryo transfer on Day3(egg retrieval is day0) depending on egg quality. Day at the hospital again. Day5 transfer of the egg if number of embryos is high and the quality Grade 1- it means that they could survive in the petre dish by themselves. The chances of implantation are higher in day5 transfer.
e) Wait for -ve/+ve result on day 14
Hope this helps.
ps. If motility is the issue that IVF with ICSI is performed. ie sperm is helped move into the egg. I think ICSI is standard in Hong Kong.

#1 From your post it seemed that the dr. is suggesting IUI if IVF fails- which would be weird, so I just wanted to clarify that it is the other way around.
#2 could relate to both IUI and IVF- sometimes same meds are used for inducing super-ovulation. But suppression is given (in my knowledge) only in IVF.
#3 costs are be less for iui because no hospital fee and labwork involved but the meds are quite expensive.... easily over $1000 a pop.
Google icsi. you will find more info that you need. makes ivf easier since the sperms don't have to do any work!
