I am 25 weeks pregnant and am curious about the 4D ultrasound - has anyone done it? It is worth getting one done? If so, which clinic should I go to?
Thanks.

You get some very beautiful pictures. Is it worth it? Well, it is beautiful to see, but that is it. Dr. Alex Doo has a very good machine and operates it very well. I am sure there are many others too ....
When you do get it done, remember that the nose will appear a bit bigger because of the technical limitations, but I have to say that the pictures look as if you have taken a polaroid picture of a three-dimensional baby - and our baby looked very much like the pre-birth pictures.

Hi Chrispy, I just did it during my last check up. I'm seeing Dr. Macor Wan at Central and he has the equipment at his clinic. Here is the website: http://www.hkpdc.com/ You can find sample 4D photos there.
It says the best timing to do the scan is at 28 weeks onwards. I think it's worthwhile as you can really see the little one's facial features and movement clearly. Amazing indeed.

Thanks for the link - if the fee is just $1500 then I think I will go for it - somehow I thought it would cost a lot more! =P
I went to the same clinic too for the Noninvasive test for Down's syndrome, but with Dr. Lam.
Thanks again!

I had my 4D scan at 28 weeks with Dr. Lam -- thought I would be a bit freaked out, but was absolutely enchanted with what I saw. Baby looked just like his dad!! We were in there for about 30 minutes and Dr. Lam was fantastic about explaining everything we saw. Got a DVD (with a sound recording of our conversation) plus a CDR of stills that we could show the grandparents (and possibly the baby when it is older!). Worth every penny IMHO.

Did you have to bring your own DVD or do they supply everything?

They supply everything. They have the DVD and the photos printed out for your record.

Dr Christine Choy uses a 4D scan for your check ups if pregnant. It was part of the consulation fee i didn't pay any extra so not sure how much it would be just for that. It was great we have loads of photos from it, she also did a cd of it for us.

Yes, it's definitely HK$1500 with Dr Lam at the HK Prenatal Diagnosis Centre (linked above). They recommend 28 weeks. It's fantastic.

I did 4D scan to get more precise mesurement of everything as an alternative for getting amnio. The theory is, if there is anything wrong, like Down Syndrome, there is a big chance that would show up in as some sort of deformity and that would be easy to detect with better scan. We decided that we woulnd't do amnio so went for 4D scan. You may want to ask your doctor what the benefits are to get 4D instead of the normal scan. Of course, you cannot detect everything from scan, but we were happy that everything was in the normal range. My friend also got 4D scan because her doctor saw some shadow in the baby's brain when they did a normal scan, but everything looked fine with 4D scan.

Go to Dr Choy at Care for Women. She has all the latest equipment.

It is interesting, this is a VERY Hong Kong discussion, talking about the persnal pleasure derived from U/S studies. There is nothing wrong with this but it is VERY HK. Generally in most countries the doctor has to be able to document to either the government or the Ins companies that the U/S was medically indicated and that it will provide information that will have an effect on the management of the prgnancies. If a doctor orders 'too many' U/S the doctor can be disiplines for over-use of recources. My daughter who had a baby in London recently had only one U/s, the anatomical scan at 19weeks and this is very standard.

Just shows how the health system is in the UK in my opinion! I know in many countries the ultrasound is done by a technician. We are very lucky here that most ob/gynae do the u/s themselves and have the latest equipment.

Not just HK, i moved form HK to S'pore and they do the smae here. In Australia they don't do any where near the amount of U/S but as we had fertility treament and had also lost a bubs at 9wks we were happy to have all the U/S as we knew everything was alright and could relax a little more.

comes down to cost i suppose (for the Dr's)

An excellent study was done by the national Institute of Health in the Us and it found that multiple U/S does NOT improve outcome. I think the protocol of many european countries is excellent. If there are no other indications---
1 at about 8 weeks to show viability 2) one at 18-20 weeks, the anatomical scan and 3) one at 36 weeks to review growth, fluid volume and another anatomical scan. Others can be done if there are suitable indications.
Obviously there is more control in countries where health services are provided by the government or by structured insurance plans such as HMOs in the USA.
As a doctor I am not sure that I agree that Drs are always better than technicians, the best techs are certainly better than the average Dr, they do it all day , every day and are suberb.

I think as long as there is no harm to the mom and baby for using scan during pregnancy and as long as you can afford it then it's a nice thing to do. I personally enjoy the experience and am always very happy to see the little one growing inside me - esp.in the early stage when you can't feel the baby's movement - being able to see your baby looking well thru the scan is very comforting abd reassuring!

Agree with Dr Moreton- I'd rather have a blood test done by the nurse than the doctor- it's always less painful when the nurse does it.
