New - need advise on IUI

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all, I just moved here from Australia and my husband and I have completed testing for recurrent miscarriages. I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and was transfered to high risk fertility specialist.

We are about to embark on our first IUI cycle and I was hoping to get some personal accounts on what to expect, what sort of things to avoid, and what your experience has been.

Glad to have found this site. Cheers, Sydney

Hi welcome to HK.

I've gone through 4 IUI's myself, but due to having policystic ovaries. IUI itself is a simple process of having your husbands sperm washed and then inserting it into your uterus with a catheter. It is not very painful or uncomfortable and you can resume normal activities soon after.

What makes it awful is the drugs that you may be given before the process. In my case since I have PCOS they need to give me follicle stimulating drugs which can amke you sick depending on the dosage. These drugs can also hyper stimulate your ovaries which is an awful experience.

But all in all the IUI itself is not too complicated.

Good luck and hords of baby dust to you.

HI Sydney yes this site is a blessing isn't it. It is a great support network as well. I also have PCO and have done 5 IUI and one IVF. One of the IUI's resulting in a mispregnany at 9 weeks. I am currently 9 weeks pregnant but was all nautral. I have a great Dr as many on this thread will also contest to. Her Name is Dr Choy and she has a clinic in Central. Her number is 3112 0480. It's obviously important to have a Dr you trust and who is open to your opinion. My Dr is very knowlegdable on infertility but will listen to us and is flexiable on treatment. She doesn't play god. I think you need to ask the Dr if they are will to listen to what you want and want to do and if you don't agree is ok with that. Also a lot of these Dr are in the Cental area so if you are planning to live furter away you may want to find a Dr closer to you as you do frequent them a lot from the 2nd day till the 14th day. IUI isn't so bad not as intrusive as IVF but as AC1234 said the drugs get to you a little but your situation could be different to ours. All the best and please keep us up todate with your move and the Dr process.
