I have heard they can be in excess of HKD80K and sometimes over HKD100K. You should take out a medical insurance policy through Andrew at RS Insurance Brokers. He has plans that provide full refunds, 100% of the costs, or most of the amount. It depends on how much your budget is.
His contact details are 3106-2698, or email andrew@rsib.com.hk
Good luck!

Alot $$$. I had my pregnancy with Dr.Lucy Lord. She was the right doctor for me. Every scan costs but I also ended up with a c- section which cost $$$ I went semi private on a Sunday and it was $120.000 thousand. Pubic is alot less but you have no say in who is attending. Alot less. I think its about $20.000 for a private c-section. Don't quote me on that one but my friend whose baby was born at 28 weeks at Queen Mary was very well cared for. You just have to decide how much hand holding you want. And ladies that is what it comes down too. You know the doctor, you need the constant company and you still end up with a baby. You must ask your own questions. You must ask about what can go wrong because in HK if it does go pear shaped you will end up at QM in pokfulam because its the only place on the isalnad witha neo natyal ward.
Bear that in mind. Love the fact you ask.

Antenatal classes are HK$2000 per couple, six classes.
Private room for a normal delivery is HK$35,000 three night stay, all inclusive.
Private room for a booked C/S is HK$45,000.
Private room for an emergency C/S is HK$55,500.
For obs, anaesthetist and paediatrician fees you should check with the clinic as they vary, they should also be able to give you information on the scanning fees.
If I can be of any further assistance please feel free to give me a call, I don't always get chance to come back to the thread.

I am having my first baby and will be delivering at QM as I was also born there some 30 yrs ago.
Am planning to go private at QM but will make my decision once I have done by tour of the maternity facilities and reviewed the costs. Quite frankly I don't want to go into debt delivering my baby.

Sadly some of us have found ourselves pregnant without adequate medical insurance coverage - so we have to pay out of our own pockets.

The good thing about HK, is you do have options... private with insurance coverage is great, but the public hospitals are good, and as said above QM are the experts for serious emergencies.
The most important thing is getting to go home with your healthy baby!
I would add, that the services from annerley are great, so if you do go public or private, the pre-natal classes and the home visits are wonderful - especially the home visits, they are a godsend the first few days/weeks/months and worth every penny for the help and sanity they bring.

Unless you get a package from your OB, you also need to factor in any post-delivery, in-hospital doctor's fees. Our OB shocked us with his daily rate for a 2-minute check-up. It made the difference between a private and semiprivate room a rounding error by comparison.
Also, I don't know if the group antenatal classes are all that worthwhile. A lot (all?) of the information is available for free on certain HK-based baby websites. Better to invest the money in a good library of childcare books and a couple of home visits from a midwife.

For me, the midwives at Matilida were a godsend. SO helpful, so reassuruing, and always there when you needed them--lactation assistance, burping, bathing, swaddling.... They made it all seem easy.
All things being equal (and the lovely room not withstanding), it's good to find out how much support you'll have AFTER the birth wherever you choose. I'd read all the books and taken an excellent antenatal class...but now it was for real and far more difficult than I thought.

Dear Vulvic,
How was the tour of the QM....have you made a decision!?...
I have just fallen pregnant with my first child and am trying to decide what the hell to do!
Please support our advertisers:
Hi Tracey,
My tour isn't until 22nd April but will let you know how it goes!
I totally agree with the 'what on earth do do' feeling! You feel all at sea with no clue what to do. Once I found I was pregnant, I told my GP and she referred me to a great gynaecologist. I talked through my options with him and decided to go the QM route rather than Mathilda. Although we can afford to go private, the cost of it all is just galling.
So for now I have my pre-natal check ups at Tsan Yuk hospital and find the nurses there to be lovely. You do have to wait a while but as long as you know that, it isn't a problem. I just take a bottle of water and a good book! I also supplement these check-ups by seeing my own gynaecologist for scans and check-ups and find this works well for me.
Will be having private antenatal clases with Annerley Midwives and will also have a few home visits after we bring baby home.

Hello -- I also just found out I am pregnant and am trying to find my way ;-)
All of the above is very helpful. Did I understand well that you can do your antenatal checks in one place (eg Tsan Yuk) and then still choose where you want to deliver your baby (eg QM or Matilda)?
Can anyone recommend a good gynaecologist too?
Then finally any phone number I try (Tsan Yuk or Matilda) to book an appointment seems to have an answering machine and tell me to wait to be called... Is that normal? Any chance to find an easier way to book an appointment?
Thank you all for your help!
Greetings!

Quando, I always call Tsan Yuk on this number and they forward you to the appropriate department: 2589 2100. The staff who answer the calls are always efficient and helpful.
Vulvic, I am going through the same route as you (Tsan Yuk plus private checkups, Annerley classes then QM delivery)is it true that QM only allows husbands into the delivery room who have done the Tsan Yuk antenatal classes? Will evidence that they have done the Annerley ones be enough to get them in? I am a little concerned because we both work and there is no way we can get to the Tsan Yuk classes...
Let me know anybody has any info on this.
Thanks!

Blossom12345 - thanks for that! Was also a bit worried as like Quando, we cannot do the Tsan Yuk classes due to work committments. To be honest would rather do the private antenatal classes anyway.
Quando - have you done your tour of QM yet? Mine is on the 22nd so am making a list of questions to ask!

I wanted to do the group classes with Annerly to build-up a Mums network but our schedules are crazy at the moment and my partner travels every week to China. Hence the one on one

Blossom12345 thanks for the confirmation -- I had difficulty believing that the QM would keep husbands out of the delivery room just because they did the Annerley classes instead of the Tsan Yuk ones!
I'm really looking forward to starting my Annerley classes in June and meeting new mums -- how many weeks do you all plan to be when you start your classes?
Please support our advertisers:
Mine are starting in July (due 18th September.)

I am starting mine at the end of June when I will be 33 weeks. Do you think this will be too late? Both me and my husband have travel commitments at the beginning of June but I don't want to start the classes too early...
Please support our advertisers:
Hm... Maybe I should start my classes earlier, since they are supposed to go on for 5 weeks! Thanks for all the tips on the QM, Blossom, especially on the breastfeeding because I really want to start BF as soon as possible. Definitely planning to be a geek about gathering all possible information.

I had a good experience at QM with help for breastfeeding and labor. I had taken the private classes at Annerly with Hulda, so I had SOME idea about breastfeeding, but when I got to the bed, and was cosleeping with my baby - it was a different story. But quite a few of the nurses were really helpful - the bottom line is at QM - you have TO ASK and sort of be insistent. Because I was having some difficulty I kept on asking for help - and I did get some.

I ran into a friend on Saturday that I hadn't seen in a while. She had bother her daughters at QM and spoke very highly of them.
I think it all comes down to personal experience.
Am planning to go to a few meetings with La Leche League prior to baby arriving. I believe they are very helpful in providing advice for Mums-to-be.

Blosson -- did you find the midwives at QM less helpful / knowledgable that the ones at Tsan Yuk?
A friend who trained and worked at the QM assured me that while there are a lot of student midwives / doctors around (by nature of the QM being a teaching hospital), their supervisors are extremely strict about who is permitted to attend patients. I was also told that if, at any time I felt unsure about the response I was receiving then I should ask for "a second opinion". Apparently, these magic words let you bypass the students straight to the supervisors who are all first rate.

What about having a C-section in QM? Having had two C-sections at the Matilda i obviously have ecpectations (without sounding horribly snobbish).
Please support our advertisers:
Its stories like this that have put me off the public system. I went there a few times for checkups, and some of the doctors were very nice, but this other doctor was quite abrupt and refused to answer my questions. They dont tell you size of the baby or weight, and are not at all forthcoming. Honestly, I cannot take a chance on getting "lucky".
I'd like to do a study on whether treatment differs by ethnicity. Most of my english expat friends got great treatment and couldnt speak highly enough of QM, but I have a Chinese-canadian friend who had a terrible time, needles stuck into her, sac broken, etc etc without any explanation, and an indonesian friend who was left to scream on a gurney...

Blossom, oh my goodness, it sounds like you had a total nightmare at the QM! I have to say that the thing that makes me most uncomfortable about the Queen Mary is the possibility of having inexperienced students poking around and giggling if they do something wrong.
I haven’t done any hospital tours yet, and am still researching the different possibilities, but I suspect that in the end my choice will still be to deliver at the QM. It may be a little weird for me personally, but I really support the way that the medical students are being brought up through the hospital, and as you say, if anything goes wrong (be it a medical emergency or – God forbid – student error) then there is nowhere better equipped to deal with this than the Queen Mary.
