I had to post a message about Dr. Ho and Kelly, his lovely assistant following my recent delivery. Dr. Ho is friendly and very professional. He is so mild mannered and calm that he makes the entire pregnancy and birthing process a breeze. I had a c-section and the results are excellent with minimal scaring and no complications following the procedure. I rarely had to wait for him during our visits and when I asked him questions they were answered frankly and knowledgeably. I felt very welcome and comfortable with Dr. Ho because I was remembered every time I came to the office. I highly recommend his services.

Mummy - Have you spoken to many people about this? Wondering now too.

Hmmm, ok. I'm going to have to talk to him, without mentioning your story of course. With all that goes on during pregnancy and delivery, etc., moms (and dads) don't need this extra worry.
When I asked him about bringing a doula in, he was fine with it. He didn't see the need for it, but he also didn't discourage. I asked him why he didn't see the need and he told me too about the fact that their will be a midwife present and that the doulas in the HK system aren't networked in so they really don't do anything official. I told him that I would like to have someone else (in addition to my husband) I know there for support. He said (and the conversation wasn't in this order, but these things all came up) that sometimes there's a danger when doulas have women waiting longer into labour before they head to the hospital and then it becomes a rushed situation for all involved---staff included---and since the doulas are not networked in with the doctor and the hospital here, that the hospital might not know when we're coming. Of course, this point didn't seem as important to me since we can ask the doula to go earlier if we want, we'd get a doula we trust who knows well how this all works, and we can all call the hospital.
I asked Ho too about interventions, but this is my first so I see we need to ask some more specifics next time. I asked him in particular about rules for drugs/epidurals (when, where, availability, etc.) and found the rules and his attitude to be fine with that. I asked to about his c-section rate and told him I heard that many people have been encouraged to have c-sections (not necessarily by him, but in general) and asked if he's inclined towards c-sections as well...i.e. would he encourage it. I made clear that I want as little interventions as possible; he seemed fine with that. BUT, I am going to ask about this water breaking and about this lying down thing....lying down is about the most uncomfortable position (particularly on your back!) already, and I can't imagine having to be like that for hours. Bologna to be forced to do so.
Mummy, can I ask where you are from/what nationality you are? I got the sense from speaking with Ho that he holds some ideas as to what people from different cultures (i.e. local Asian vs. expats) want and I'm not sure if that affects his answers. Of course that wouldn't be a good policy, and I'm not sure it's his or even if he's aware of it if it is his, but I'm wondering.
Nonetheless, I'm going to ask more questions.
As for the scan, as I said, this is my first. We've had four scans. Clear at times, not at others. Don't know that we've seen tissue layers. Please let me know how that scan goes, and if you don't mind, who is the other dr. you're considering switching too?
We got Ho from our general practioner, who is very good. Ho delivered several of her babies. All in all, he's been good. I do pump him with questions, and even question him on his answers. There was only one day where he seemed a little edgy and it was the day his waiting room was crowded and slow moving.
I think we will have a doula with us either way at this point. Seems like the best thing to do.
We're still deciding between adventist and matilda. The midwife we met there was very nice too. We told her about our doula; she also didn't think it was necessary, but I think people are discounting the relationship factor....that is, it's nice to have people you already know and trust and who already know you there for the big event; they'll know best what your needs and tastes are from a personal perspective. And with their knowlege of the process and your needs, they can help to make sure things go the way you'd prefer when that way is possible.

Thanks, Mummy. I look forward to the PM's. We'll send our first scan as well if I can locate it on the computer. Very interested. Wondering if we should try a scan elsewhere too.... The 13week one your referring to...is that from Ho with this pregnancy?
I totally hear you on your reservations...especially after being told one thing and receiving another the first time around. And again, flat on your back is uncomfortable; someone's not thinking. I can't speak for Ho's disposition really...he's been great, but again he was a little less talkative and obviously trying to be patient last time we were there when the waiting room was busy (the busiest I had ever seen it with him...3 or 4 couples in the office at one time), so I can see that sometimes he can be affected by *external situations*. Nonetheless, I'll bring up the doula thing again (and the water) to get a feel again; the doula we mentioned is also well-known and yet he had never worked with her. Going to speak with him about it again.
Other than this, he's gotten very good *reviews* for his deliveries....so we'll see!

Hi Mummy,
If you are into all natural do give it a try with Dr Dawkins. He is definitely into things taking its own course and happening the natural way. Very confident in his approach too. I dont have a baby yet but have seen him for some other Gyny isuues which some others made it sound so serious. He said it would heal on its own and I am happy to say that it did with no medication or operation s whatsoever.

All this talk about Dr Ho's history with caesarian etc makes me nervous. I am into my 7th month and have been going to him. While is a wonderful doctor, this forum has me worried. Are there any patients of Dr Ho who have had natural labour & delivery?

RA - Maybe start a new thread with the title something like Anyone use Dr. Ho and have a natural labour/delivery?
I'm with Ho and a little further along than you. Considering options and will speak with him too.
