A few months ago, I gave my wife the important news that I had decided to run a marathon. “That is a cliché,” she replied immediately, showing less interest than I’d hoped in my exciting midlife crisis. I took on board her feedback and, some days later, announced that I would be doing a triathlon instead. “That is even more of a cliché,” came the response.

But there is something more powerful than the scepticism of one’s partner: the pull of charity. So I am now one of the people emailing their acquaintances, asking for sponsorship. Yes, it is the season of begging emails. Cyclists and runners career around your inbox as if it’s a pavement in central London.
