Lamma - good to live?

I think the southern part of Lantau Island (Discovery Bay or even Mui Wo) is better than Lamma both in terms of living quality and transportation. Even if there is a Typhoon you can still get to work by car or bus, and the fast ferries to Central only take 25-30 Minutes. Furthermore, local people tend to look down on Lamma residents.

I think the best thing to do is have a look when you get here as each place varies so much. I lived on Lamma for 18 months and met some amazing people, it is great if you don't know anyone in HK as people are very friendly and will always help you out! The beaches are great, the skies are often much clearer and the prices are very cheap, both for accomodation and general living; food, shopping etc. However, I now live in Central as I couldn't face the ferry anymore. Last ferry back to Lamma is 12.30am, so if you want to go out for the evening and not rush home then you have to face a sampan on the often choppy waters or wait for first early morning ferry to get you home. I can't compare to the Gold Coast as I haven't been there but I hope this helps!

Mobile> What is the timing like from GC to Central (and/or back) when the bridge is closed?

I have lived on Lamma for 10 years and it is a great place to live. Yes, much quieter than Central, not always completely peaceful as we still have our share of construction projects, but it is certainly a relief after a busy day in Hong Kong.

It really is very easy to meet people and be part of the community.

The last ferry is at 12:30 and the ferries are very regular throughout the day - they take 30 minutes maximum and of course you never have to worry about getting stuck in traffic. The ferry is a perfect place to sit and relax, get some work done or chat to friends. They are only cancelled on a typhoon 8. In my ten years of living here, I have had to miss work about 3 times.

The rents are much cheaper and you get a lot more space for your money.

Hope I have given you another viewpoint on Lamma

Just adding one more question here, How about the Hospital and clinic facilities in LAMMA?

I am also considering to move to LAMMA and I think this is a very important point to consider.

The Lamma fast ferry costs $16 and the slow ferry costs $11.

Lamma rents are significantly cheaper than Central rents. You can rent a 350 sq ft studio for about $3K/month up to a 2 storey village house with a sea view & large garden for about $20k/month - these are hard to find however as they are much are demand.

Lamma has an old sleepy fishing village feeling whereas the Gold Coast is a modern development next to Tuen Mun - a new town full of skyscrapers. There are no supermarkets, shopping malls, cinemas, MacDonalds or 7 11's on Lamma and buildings may be no more than 3 storeys high. There are no cars so no roadside pollution and it's peaceful - I wake up to birds singing. It's very rustic - not a very popular quality in HK which is why some HK'ers do look down on residents of Lamma

So it's horses for courses....

I am pointing out that Gold Coast and Lamma are very different.

As I said - horses for courses.
