Hi, we are looking at living at the Gold Coast and would like to hear from anyone currently living there. Everyone has there opinions of the place - too far etc. Do you enjoy living there? What is the area like? We have 3 kids and need space, flat areas for bike riding and a field to throw a frisbee.

Hi Jodies,
I have Pm you re the relocation company in Sai Kung/ CWB for you to have a look out there.
Something you might difficult being out on the west side is the seperation of your children from others at the school. People do not want to visit that side of the world if they can avoid it, and it is a long way for you to bring your kids in for a play time with others. (Or pick them up). I know I don't live out there, and others who do may have a different perspective, but most of the people I know who have lived there with kids have usually moved elsewhere after their lease is up or they manage to sell their place.

We don't live there, but we visited a couple of times when we were thinking of it. The Gold Coast looks lovely in photos, but the reality is that Tuen Mun is an industrial area that gets its fair share of pollution from Castle Peak power station and from the airport. Tuen Mun came into being as an emergency rehousing district for recent Mainland immigrants, and it is still seen that way by locals. It is considered the other side of the world by most, and that journey into Central is unending (by HK standards ... 40 mins plus the bus waiting time, but it seems longer as it is not scenic - unlike the ride in from Stanley or somewhere; and the KMB buses play that noisy TV advertising that drives you to distraction). In short, it is hard to see what the Gold Coast offers that Disco Bay or Sai Kung does not.

Jodies,
I have lived in and around the Gold Coast area for 9 years and have been happy with what it has to offer.
The bus to Central (962) takes 40minutes and runs throughout the day and most of the night.
Where you choose to live will purely depend on your requirements, so best of luck.

Have lived in the area for 9 years as well. It is getting busier and busier and houses many of the Disney staff now.
Agree with Dimac on some points re children. There are plenty of children in the Gold Coast and my children have always had plenty of friends. The downside is schooling, you only have ESF and if you want a good international school you need to travel and be prepared for your children to do the same. As far as good secondary international schools go, there are none in the Western New Territories and in my opinion you will need to travel to the island. I would seriously look at the schooling requirements first and foremost.
Most people in the Gold Coast own a car and in 25 mins you are through the Western Harbour tunnel and parked in Central.
Interesting that as a Gold Coast resident I cringe at the thought of living in Sai Kung and Discovery Bay just seems a bit weird to me - I can not work out how people can catch ferry's busses, cabs and run around in mini golf carts just to get home!
It is really a lovely community out here - but remember the schooling is a complete downside unless you are prepared to go ESF.

Sai Kung is also most convenient with a car and is not at all weird! (although some people may be a little)

Park Island mate, Fun, 5 star, 25 Minute ferry to central or 30 minute bus then mtr to central. Green, live on the beach, pet friendly, gay friendly (at least they are nice to my partner and I (also mixed)) growing expat population. Oh and also only 20 minutes to Gold Coast.

Chercrsh, thanks for the info, If i may ask what do you think the % of the expats population in goldcoast? 10% or more?? How do you guys find meeting friends when you first move to HK??

I know a few expat’s in Gold Coast just a guess its probably less than 10% expat, but 10% expat would be a lot and something around the city-wide average. And that would include all the expat’s from asia, and middle east as well as the west. Even in Midlevels I would guess a ratio of more like 20 locals to 1 expat, but gold coast is a large spread out rural area compared to Midlevels, Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay, or even Central Sai Kung. There are quite a few bars and pubs right in the Gold Coast mall area that are regular haunts for the westerners that I know. I have also been told that there is a relatively large Gay community out there.
As to making friends Hong Kong is like any similar major city (New York, London, Tokyo) in that there are as many types of groups and ways to meet them as one could imagine. The popular hang out for young unmarried westerners is the Lang Kwai Fong bar area of Central. There a gajillion (a 1 followed by, oh who cares) interest groups and clubs to meet people. HK Magazine, BC Magazine, Dollar Saver, Expat Magazine (and others) all have lists of things to do and meeting points. They Gay community is very tolerated and certainly quite active, though many of the gay clubs and groups are conducted in Chinese language a few are not. For gay issues try this page: http://sqzm14.ust.hk/hkgay/
Hope that helps you get centered.
